will someone PLEASE tell me what happened at the press conference?

LittleSarah · 18/01/2007 15:09

You see I don't get this racially motivated or racist... I am sure in the end it is the same thing.

And all of it is awful, I agree.

BYE JADE.

Aloha · 18/01/2007 15:09

Well, I wouldn't like to meet Jade in a dark alley and I'm white! I was picked on at school for 'talking posh', which I don't, particularly. I think class hatred has always been alive and well in England.

Rhubarb · 18/01/2007 15:09

I think this ignoring of my posts is tantamount to bullying tbh!

doormat · 18/01/2007 15:09

yes hatwoman
I think they should investigate all complaints of bullying

it is emotional gbh and assault imo

and emotional abuse can be worse than physical

ruty · 18/01/2007 15:10

i too find it odd how people are keen to say it is not racism, and then go on to define something that can't be anything else.

For immediate issue

At a press conference today at the Oxford Media Convention 2007 Andy Duncan, Channel 4's Chief Executive, made the following statement:

"In the seven years it has been on air Big Brother has seldom been far from the headlines.

The reason it commands so much attention, intentionally or unintentionally, is that it goes to the heart of who we are as individuals and as a society.

The latest series of Celebrity Big Brother has strayed into particularly controversial territory - the issue of racism and whether or not it remains ingrained in British attitudes despite all the progress we have apparently made towards becoming a truly multi-cultural society.

The level of complaint and comment shows the programme has touched a real nerve.

The debate has been heated, the viewing has at times been uncomfortable but, in my view, it is unquestionably a good thing that the programme has raised these issues and provoked such a debate. These attitudes, however distasteful, do persist - we need to confront that truth.

What constitutes racism is a complex question. We have been monitoring extremely carefully events in the house and have reached the view that we cannot with certainty say that the comments directed at Shilpa have been racially motivated or whether they stem from broader cultural and social differences.

We have already intervened with Danielle and, as viewers will see tonight, again with Jade where we felt their comments might be construed to have racist overtones. Producers also spoke to Shilpa today who said she did not feel that behaviour towards her was racist.

We will not hesitate to intervene again if apparently racist behaviour occurs.

Big Brother's unique strength is that it is ultimately the public who will decide whether or not the behaviour of certain contestants has been unacceptable.

Tomorrow night Jade and Shilpa will face the public vote. The British public has the opportunity to cut through the claim and counter-claim and pass its judgement on the events of the last week.

In the last 25 years Channel 4 has undoubtedly played a major role as a broadcaster to inform and educate viewers about issues of race. This is a role that I intend Channel 4 to continue playing".

dotcotton · 18/01/2007 15:11

God this culture clash - not racism thing is rubbish. It implies that their behaviour represents our culture - are we all loud ignorant bigoted bullies, and all Indians confident, dignified recipients of bullying? Would people really prefer that than just to call it what it is?

ruty · 18/01/2007 15:11

ok i'll go with the 'has found its expression in racism' definition.

Aloha · 18/01/2007 15:12

I think if everyone went to the police every time they thought someone was being a bit mean to them, or not inviting them to a party or laughing at them behind their back or calling them 'big-nose', they'd get a bit overwhelmed.

Blu · 18/01/2007 15:12

Indeed, Aloha.
Actually, nobody should have to meet Jade anywhere!

Did you see on another thread that she nearly ran a MN-er obver in her 4x4?? Your fears are well placed.

AitchTwoOh · 18/01/2007 15:12

well, yes, i agree with you there littlesarah but at least it's a definition that might allow people who have a very tight and explicit definition of racism to expand it a little.

Blu · 18/01/2007 15:12

(my last post was about Jade in a dark alley)

expatinscotland · 18/01/2007 15:14

What bollocks!

Give Jade a chance to turn it round like she did the last time.

Shilpa specifically told both Cleo and Jermaine that she felt it was racial, and she hasn't heard those other comments said behind her back.

Truly disgusting.

I won't be patronising Channel 4 by watching this or voting.

Vote w/your purses, folks.

Rhubarb · 18/01/2007 15:14

Can you backdate claims?

If so then I accuse my former classmates of sieism!

Enid · 18/01/2007 15:14

from popbitch:

Vote Shilpa!

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 18/01/2007 15:14

I am sooo
at that tw*t of a chief exec from c4. what he's essentially saying is that they're doing nothing about it and that the public should vote to decide. so effectively he's canvassing for votes/more money for them.

it's shocking to say the least. Ofcom should be interveening and now and should take this vile trash off the air as of now.

"viewers tonight will see that we've spoken to jade" thus encouraging people to keep watching, "ultimately the public will decide" thus encouraging people to keep voting.

what an absolute f**ing cop-out from them!

Cashncarry · 18/01/2007 15:15

thank you for the update AitchTwoOh

As for the statement, what a load of old crap

Aaaaaaargh!

Blu · 18/01/2007 15:16

I bet Andy Duncan's PR ept sweated all night about that! It's very skilful...apart from the fudging about racially motivated...puts the responsibility with the viewer.

And yes, it holds no water at all unless Shilpa is mae aware of the myriad comments that have been made behind her back. Such as the 'handling the food' one.

tiredemma · 18/01/2007 15:16

Has Shilpa and that 'thing' been informed that they are up yet?

Blu · 18/01/2007 15:18

Rhubarb - and...?

Aloha · 18/01/2007 15:20

I can even see why the other housemates are unwilling to put themselves in the line of her fire. She seems quite possessed by rage. I wouldn't have been surprised to see her go for the kitchen knives with Shilpa.
If she wasn't so rich (though I honestly doubt £8million. I don't think Heat and dodgy exercise videos pay that well) and so horrible I'd even feel sorry for her, for being so stupid and having such an appalling, abusive upbringing.

mummylin2495 · 18/01/2007 15:23

i am sure that no-one will tend to take any notice if jade suddenly becomes all sweetness and light to shilpa after she has been spoken to,we can all vote tomorrow then jade will find out how much of a hated figure she has become

Blu · 18/01/2007 15:23

I think Jermaine and some others had a conversation quite early on about challenging them over their behaviour, and Jermaine pointed out that it would be counter-productive and they would hate Shilpa even more if they protected her.

I think Dirk and the other men are generally bemused by the behaviour of the harpies.

btw, i still love Caligula's description (way, way below) of Jade as a shrieking Caliban or frankenstein's monster.
