DM Corrects Inaccurate Crime Stats

The newspaper's "correction” reads: “In common with other newspapers, an article on February 17 said that criminal ‘convictions’ for EU migrants had gone up by 40% in five years with 700 being found guilty every week. In fact, as the article went on to explain, the figures related to ‘notifications’, which include breaches of court orders and appeals as well as convictions.”

Yes, it is rather depressing when posters cite Daily Mail articles in which to "validate" their opinions/arguments.

Let me guess, it's a tiny correction buried on page 28?

EU migration has caused vast amounts of crime.

Since 2001, the prison population in England & Wales is up 14x for Bulgarians, 5x for Czechs, 15x for Latvians, 15x for Lithuanians, 16x for Poles, 18x for Romanians, 28x for Slovakians.

An evidence-based approach would block immigration from Romania and Lithuania, for example, due to very high criminality rates. But we can't, because of the EU.

And shortly, Albania, which also has very high criminality, will join the EU and we will get more criminals.

EU migrants are not all the same - if we are asked in a referendum if we would like to receive three million more migrants in order to concrete over the South of England and enrich the bankers, land owners, and to drive down working class wages, then in the event of Blair or Cameron having received a 'Yes' vote, then to have opened the doors only to Poland, say, would have been a sensible choice. But to do so with Albania, Lithuania, or Romania, would not be sensible.

To the extent that we want migration, or perhaps our rulers decide to ignore what we want, and determine that we NEED migration, then it is still madness and indefensible NOT to discriminate by country of origin.

My first thought from your post and without checking the facts is:
Is the increase related to the increase in number of immigrants?
Then, is the crime rate above that of the UK?
And what sort of crimes?

Egosumquisum : that's not a debunking, more of a waffling. As the article notes, 0.8% (as of April 2016) of the prison population is Romanian. This is hugely disproportionate to their proportion of the overall British population.

That's standard in any serious analysis.

I'm not surprised that criminals emigrate first and in larger numbers than law abiding citizens, particularly if related to criminal organisations. Once normal immigration is established, and criminals are consistently arrested and people in general achieve higher standards of living, and integrate in society, it is expected that crime rates will be similar to those in the host general population.

But this comment is meaningless:

An increase does not correlate with "vast amounts", even if there is a huge increase. It could just mean that there was one inmate in 2001 and then 14 Bulgarians in recent years, for example. The absolute numbers are important. As is the evolution over all years, and the corresponding increase in overall population (if the number is known for the same period - as shown in the article you have linked to, the exact figures are not known).
