DP thinks it well over 50k a year and that 50k a year is still aspirational middle class.

We are working class, and will be until we retire when we will just be poor old pensioners.

Monkeytrousers · 15/01/2007 00:34

Oh Moley, lets not get into Bourdieu!

I thought it was how many types of pasta you had. I have wholewheat spaghetti, linguine, tricolour twizzles, shells, macaroni and penne. Bugger me, I'm royalty.

Molesworth · 15/01/2007 00:38

myturn · 15/01/2007 00:44

ROFL!! Just had too many wines, and we have been here before... just can't be arsed to be honest. I'm SURE there are other more important issues to be discussed, like...

global warming
the fur trade
tony blair
whether grey is in or out

but frankly I am too far gone to care about any of these life defining issues. So I will just get OFF this thread and let you discuss.

Sorry.

myturn · 15/01/2007 00:45

But I would agree, it is definitely better than sex...

marthamoo · 15/01/2007 00:46

I need a bow tie? Oh pasta! I wouldn't be surprised if I have some lurking at the back of a cupboard...I am a veritable pasta fiend.

I don't think class has anything to do with money. Some Upper Class people are flat broke. There is a very good book called Watching the English by I think her name is Karen Fox. It deals with this and is a very enjoyable read.

SenoraPartridge · 15/01/2007 08:50

fio - accent does define class. upper class people speak with a plumb in their gorb no matter where they come from and in every area there's a difference between the middle class accent and the working class one (generally speaking, the more middle class you are, the more you speak like what the queen does).

but anyway, accent is a marker of class, but fundamentally the difference is about attitude and education and ultimately about choice. I (a teacher/programmer/language bore and general middle class person) have many many more choices than someone who, say, left school with no O levels (unless their daddy knew people).

paulaplumpbottom · 15/01/2007 08:55

I don't think its just accent I also think its your use of the English accent. I know someone who has a very posh accent but reveals herself by her poor use of the English language.

paulaplumpbottom · 15/01/2007 08:56

sorry use of the english language

hellobello · 15/01/2007 10:52

I sound really posh despite attempts not to. It's frustrating because people think I'm well off and I have no money at all. Oh I hate having no money. I keep getting terrifying letters from the Revenue telling me that my pension is currently about 50p/week.

bandstand · 15/01/2007 10:58

and supposedly there are people who live in castles who are skint.........

paulaplumpbottom · 15/01/2007 12:20

Mostly they are skint because they live in castles. The upkeep on those things is something else.
