He was a top bloke. I met him once when I went to a recording of "Mastermind" in 1988. He stayed behind for ages afterwards signing autographs and chatting with people.

What you don't see on screen is that in between takes he was great at laughing and joking with the "contenders", putting them at their ease. The stern schoolmaster thing was all an act and everyone knew it!
