Continuing the thread, and in reply to the two last posts of thread 2

Today 08:15 OhYouBadBadKitten

I don't think it is about Trump taking risks, its more that he is a narcisstic sociopath. He feels untouchable in what he says and has no regard for the consequences.

Today 06:53 fourmummy

To be fair, voters know that all political rhetoric mostly comes to nothing (rhetoric = argumentation and persuasion, elevated to an art from in Ancient Greece). Why do you imagine Labour want to introduce votes for 16 year olds? They know that people don't become "more conservative" as they get older-they become wiser to the political process and its lies rhetoric. So what's different with Trump? Why hasn't his unbelievably unlikeable public and private persona sunk him?

Answer=risk

He is not a ready-rolled, ready-prepped and ready-to-go politician (think Blair's son parachuted into a constituency; MIliband brothers, Clintons). These are not risking much because they were cast in the role when they were made. We know that this is the case with, certainly, Clinton (numerous interviews with aides attest to this; ditto for the others). Voters are doing a risk assessment of his risks and have decided that he is worth something. It's not as simple as suggesting that if someone votes for him then they must be racist or sexist, as I've seen journos assert. Voters are effectively doing a risk assessment and deciding that given the enormous costs both to him (energy, health, time away from family, reputation, financial, career, historical implications, ) and to his voters (risk of being viewed as sexist, racist, intolerant, asshole), the benefits must outweigh these costs. Very unwise to dismiss ordinary voters as simplistically sexist and racists, as many, many journalists have (shortsightedly) done. Even non-experts are very good at performing cost/benefit analyses

As I said I don't see anything of what he says as taking a risk. Because he is saying what many people want to hear.
As for personal cost, he is clearly someone who enjoys the power, the limelight, the adoration. All that is missing for him is the ultimate power, particularly as he sees other true billionaires taking central stage.
But he doesn't have the heart to be Gates.
So, he's going for the highest office, and on the back of American voters most primal fears.

But...
He's not averse to risk. He's built his empire on it. He's had four bankruptcies. Anyone should be worried about the way he manages risk.

"Get 'em out" has even been put to music. We don't have politicians like Trump, alas.

Lweji · 05/05/2016 17:50

We don't have politicians like Trump, alas.
Or it would be even more of a circus.

I wonder how he'd start his state of the union address. Get them out?
Hopefully his good friend Kim won't be there, or she might just well get them out.
One for the history books.

Came across this by accident, and thought of Trump and his ideas about climate change.

A few scientists being, shall we say, "saying it like it is", this time for real.

i suspect most politicians are narcissists / sociopaths / psychopaths / just plain nasty nastards

bastards but nastards sounds right too

Trump is apparently reaching out to the Republican Establishment and they are starting to snuggle.
They are planning to target swing states together, orchestrate attacks on Clinton, smooches towards disgruntled Sanders supporters

www.nytimes.com/2016/05/06/us/politics/donald-trump-gop.html?_r=0

Trump has even said "I love Hispanics"
His head must be spinning after those 180 degree turns.
Tomorrow "I love Muslims"
Next week "I love Hillary" ? Well, he used to.

Giod news: he wouldn't choose the repulsive Cruz as his Veep - he would want someone who could attract more moderate / sane voters

Maybe a woman ?
Apparently, from demographics, a Republican can't become President now without winning a substantial majority of white women voters.
So Trump needs to repair his major problem with women voters, i.e. that most hate him.

Lweji · 06/05/2016 08:04

I wonder if his voters still think he tells it like it is or that they can trust him.

Trump fans don't worry, Trump has got it covered.

You may have heard how Republican House Speaker said he couldn't endorse Trump yet. Trump is meeting the stooges on Thursday. News hot off the campaign front from Trump insider, Roger Stone, is "they are about to meet the greatest dealmaker they have ever met", "the toughest son of a gun" Stone has ever known - Donald J Trump.

It is all under control, Trump has all bases covered! It's still on!

wiltingfast · 09/05/2016 18:05

Well if Claig is anything to go by, the answer is YES Hmm

Did you see he's actually advocating bankruptcy as a form of debt control for the good old USA. From CNN:

"Asked if the U.S. needs to pay its debt in full or if it could negotiate a partial repayment, Trump said: "I would borrow, knowing that if the economy crashed, you could make a deal."

Greaaat. Cause it went so well when they let Leman Bros go. Can't imagine the fallout if the US itself crashed. Wasn't pretty here in Ireland I can tell ya.

On a more positive note, the entire debacle might engender the complete breakup of the GOP, which would be hard to mourn. They have descended into a nuttier and nuttier spiral the last 10y. I live in hope of some positive lining emerging.

claig · 09/05/2016 18:07

'Did you see he's actually advocating bankruptcy as a form of debt control for the good old USA'

I think it would be fair to say that he floated that one for starters.

claig · 09/05/2016 18:09

'I live in hope of some positive lining emerging'

There is no positive lining for the world "leaders". Trump is taking America back. This is history in the making.

Lweji · 09/05/2016 22:05

The US becoming Greece.Shock

It was expected, though.

Trump is all about the bankruptcies. Hmm

Trump has today explained that the media was trying to stitch him up over that statement. He says "Us will never default because you print the money, I hate to tell you, OK" so his position now has become crystal clear.

edition.cnn.com/2016/05/09/politics/donald-trump-national-debt-strategy/

Trump puts the media right again and clarifies his policy.

claig · 10/05/2016 00:02

Democrats getting desperate and have resorted to trying to use Elizaebth Warren as an attack dog against Trump. The only problem is she is using political correctness to attack him. Fail.

Trump is having a laugh and now Roger Stone has stuck his oar in.

“Donald understands the power of Twitter,” Roger J. Stone Jr., a longtime Trump confidant, wrote in an email. “Nothing will galvanize the Republican Party like brawling with anti-business Fauxcahontas. Could not be a better contrast between Trump, who wants to create wealth, and Warren, who wants to distribute it.”

www.nytimes.com/2016/05/10/us/politics/elizabeth-warren-donald-trump.html?_r=0

It's only just started and there are 6 months to go.

Of course Trump has wasted no time in starting in on Bill and Hillary. The media asked his manager what Trump meant. Everyone knows exactly what he meant but he will reveal it all later on.

Lweji · 10/05/2016 03:42

Trump's strategy is to print money? As if it were bitcoins or something?

Roaring inflation v Bankruptcy

Glad he clarified that one....

Want2bSupermum · 11/05/2016 02:21

Inflation is exactly how the us has gotten out of trouble in the past.

Mistigri · 11/05/2016 08:46

Moderate inflation (2%) is broadly viewed as positive for a developed economy - much lower and you risk slipping into deflationary territory. This is why 2% is commonly set as an inflation target and why economists worry when inflation I zero.

Uncontrolled printing of money can quickly give rise to a rather different scenario though. Probably the best know recent example of hyperinflation is Zimbabwe. It destroyed their economy.

Shcoking economic illiteracy on display here.

Mistigri · 11/05/2016 08:49

Anyone want to talk about white supremacy and Trumpism?

"Make America white again"

The most hilarious thing about Trump's white supremacist delegate is that he wants to deport American Indians Grin.

claig · 11/05/2016 08:53

According to one article I read, Trump will solve the US debt problem so quickly, world "leaders" won't know what happened. We will have to wait and see what he does.

Katrina Pierson, Trump's black spokeswoman, was on Fox last night and suggested something like this white supremacist delegate may have been an infiltration.

Lweji · 11/05/2016 08:56

Yes, claig.
Keep covering your ears and going lalala.

OP posts:
Lweji · 11/05/2016 08:58

And which article?
You're so fond of links and extensive quotes that it makes me think it doesn't exist.

OP posts:
Mistigri · 11/05/2016 09:00

You (and the Trump team) need to go and read some basic economics. I think my 13 year old could probably do better than this.

As for the delegate, apparently a few seconds on Google would have been sufficient for vetting purposes. This is indicative of a campaign that cannot even get very basic things right. I hope that continues to be the case ;)

claig · 11/05/2016 09:01

How can Trump have anything to do with "white supremacy" when Ben Carson, who is black, has endorsed him and the brilliant non-politically correct Katrina Pierson, who is black, is his national spokesperson?

The Democrats have nothing to counter Trump with so they roll out allegations of racism and bigotry, but it won't fool the American people. World "leaders" are worried that their Establishment candidate will lose to Trump.
