Following on from Nicky Morgan MP's one sided "webchat" see here...

Active petitions against academisation are here:

Guardian article is here

You can write to your MP: www.writetothem.com/

Good luck to everyone at the demonstrations today. I can't attend

Thanks MNHQ. It is good to get an update but what about our requests to talk to other politicians who are against academisation - Jeremy Corbyn or Lucy Powell?

I agree Valentine we must keep the pressure on until it is dead and buried.

MNHQ

thanks for the update and thanks for chasing them. Hope he agrees. I will go and google him now.

In the mean time, who else will be joining us? Corbyn or Lucy Powell? I am sure that Mumsnet members will nearly unanimously agree that as we have just witnessed that the absence of something this big in party menifesto does not guarantee that it will or will not happen.
So a discussion with Corbyn et al is in order here and totally justified demand by Mner.
Right now #resigncameron is the top trend on Twitter and Cameron and cronies would try and ride it out. At least on this issue (academisation), we could put them under pressure by actually starting a solid discussion involving academics and the opposition.

Mner · 08/04/2016 20:19

I've reported a few of the previous posts as a way of nudging them every so often. After all these responses, it would be awful if it just got forgotten about.

I might join in with the tweets just for fun Smile

OP posts:
Mner · 09/04/2016 10:04

This is the response I got from MNHQ.

^Thanks very much for getting in touch. We've given our political webchat team another nudge - hopefully they'll come on the thread soon and let you know of any progress here.

Best wishes,
Dawn
MNHQ^

To be honest, I'm a bit disappointed considering the strength of the MN posts, the lack of response from Nicky Morgan and the other media outlets, that MNHQ seem to be dragging their heels on this.

If a balanced view is needed, why not invite Jeremy Corbyn alongside other MPs eg lib dems, greens, SNP or even the tories.

I feel really disappointed that they are not more willing to listen to the strength of these posts. To me it feels like they are trying to steer us away from a massive parenting issue.

Please MNHQ explain why the political webchat team are not at the forefront of this.

OP posts:
Mner · 09/04/2016 10:35

Also MNHQ I don't think you have provided a balanced viewpoint to date. Yes we had 2 opposing views but it was a bit David vs Goliath. Exactly the same as with the NHS thread.

A webchat with the professors whilst interesting is of no actual use. Whilst Nicky Morgan refuses to engage or discuss real evidence, the professors are really just more Davids.

Why not have Jeremy Corbyn and a headteacher at an academy then you can balance out the unbalanced discussions already held?

JUSTINE / MNHQ

You seem to be waiting for us to get tired and move on then ? Or is it because of the weekend ?

rollonthesummer · 09/04/2016 14:12

I agree- please ask Jeremy Corbyn to come on. I think having the views of the opposition is really important. We haven't actually asked for any professors views?!

This is the text of a letter published in the Daily Telegraph:

"SIR – The forcible transfer of 17,000 schools to academy status within the next six years, as proposed in the Government’s White Paper, will be a huge distraction from schools’ core functions of teaching and learning. Instead of focusing on children’s education, school leaders will be forced to hire lawyers, consultants and accountants, and manage the transfer of school land and buildings.

This is not what parents want from their schools; nor was this proposal part of the manifesto that the current Government put before the electorate. Under the White Paper’s plans, parents could also be banished from school governing boards.

What schools need most is stability, so they can make the latest reforms work. We stand ready to work with the Government to ensure we have an education system that meets the needs of all children and has the support of school staff, parents, local authorities, diocesan bodies and existing academy trusts.

Christine Blower General Secretary, NUT Mary Bousted General Secretary, Association of Teachers and Lecturers Cllr Melinda Tilley (Con) Cabinet Member for Children, Education & Families, Oxfordshire County Council Cllr Joe Caluori Executive Member for Children and Families, LB Islington Russell Hobby General Secretary, National Association of Head Teachers Lucy Powell MP Caroline Lucas MP Henry Stewart Co-founder, Local Schools Network Jon Richards Head of Education, UNISON Emma Knights Chief Executive, National Governors’ Association Michael Rosen "

Apart from its content, it strikes me as significant that it was published in the DT and the list of signatories.

RowanMumsnet · 11/04/2016 09:20

Morning

We have put in a request to Jeremy Corbyn to come on and thus far he hasn't bitten. We'll redouble our efforts.

The academic research may not feel very crucial to those of you who are already invested in the academies debate, but we surveyed 1k+ MNers recently on this and nearly one-third of them said they didn't know enough about academies to proffer a point of view on the question of academisation - so tbh we don't agree that a webchat with the experts (who after all are under no pressure to toe any particular party line) is of no value - we think it would be really useful to the evidently pretty large numbers of our users who genuinely aren't sure what to think or what approach might be best.

Mner · 11/04/2016 10:58

Yay! Thanks MNHQ Smile.

I think everyone is supportive of having an academic in to discuss the facts but on this thread at least, there has been a strong call for a politician as well, someone who might engage with the users and someone who is taking an opposing view.

OP posts:
TwoLeftSocks · 11/04/2016 11:06

TBH it would be great to have anyone in who'll just talk straight about it all rather than put political spin on it. Should someone from Labour or any of the smaller parties come on, I'd like them to have a credible idea about what to do with the whole LA/academy situation, rather than just opposing the government out of principal or because it's popular.

FirstVix · 13/04/2016 00:41

Thought this was interesting on some of the reasons given for 'why force academisation?'.

TwoLeftSocks · 13/04/2016 06:53

That's quite interesting data. I do also like his opening sentence "Sometimes I wonder if government ministers just make it up on the spur of the moment"

JWIM · 13/04/2016 18:25

So, having been at a briefing meeting today, I have learned that there has been no voluntary academy conversion for two years in our County. All those that wanted to convert have.

There are likely to be 3 maintained schools that may be forced conversions to sponsored academies. The County has 80%+ schools that are good/outstanding.

The cost of human energy/effort/anxiety over the White Paper is such a waste.

What was reinforced is the need to keep children at the centre of our focus and decision making - and by children really that will be those babies born today/this year as they will be most affected by the proposals, should they go ahead as outlined.

Apart from holding the Government/DfE to account for the evidence base for the White Paper proposals, I would urge all decision makers to sit on their hands and do nothing active (by all means collect information) until much further in to the Govt conversion timetable - 2019 perhaps. At last then the legislation will be clear and the options possibly more open than appears to be the case at present.

What Lucy Powell said today... Trying to find the rest of the debate and how it was all concluded

www.lucypowell.org.uk/lucy_s_opposition_day_debate_speech_on_academisation

TwoLeftSocks · 13/04/2016 22:16

It's really, really long and skipping to the end I'm not entirely sure what the outcome of it all is. If anyone can enlighten me I'd be grateful.

JWIM · 14/04/2016 13:13

Debate was covered on the Daily Politics on BBC2 noon-1pm. Ken Baker was on to discuss. Definitely lukewarm on the White Paper and suggested Nicky Morgan might want to take soundings from Tory back benchers. Noted that a number of Tory MPs spoke against the forced aspect of conversion. He thought better to have gradual persuasion/change. He also agreed that just changing the 'type' of school would do nothing, in itself, to bring about improved performance.

He even said, in conclusion, that he would like to see Education dealt with by cross party agreement and out of party politics.

And a report on the parliamentary debate in the TES

The only source of Sixth Form Education in Knowsley is closing and it is an Academy. This leaves local children who want to take A-levels facing the prospect of looking out of borough and praying there are places.

"Parents have set up a protest page on Facebook, with comments about how difficult it is to get a clear answer from anyone about what is going on.
"Who is accountable? Nobody knows. Who do we get in touch with?" says Vanessa Pointon, a parent at the school."

This is what everyone fears facing and it has already started!

TwoLeftSocks · 20/04/2016 22:28

"Finish the job" out of pride and inability to back down even when everyone's shouting wtf, even a whole bunch in your party. Just what you want in the person leading your country, stubborn pig headedness in the face of reasonable debate.

rollonthesummer · 21/04/2016 19:25

This is interesting though!

So much for democracy!

petition.parliament.uk/petitions/124702

Parliament decided not to debate the academy proposal, even though there were close to 149,000 people signing one of the two petitions. Appalling.
