Someone just put this up on their newsfeed on FB. It's so frightening. Any reassurance anyone?

No Reassurance I'm afraid. It's very worrying

Assume their nuclear weapons are untested, therefore they won't know their 'reach'

Itsallaboutme3 · 17/02/2016 19:12

First time i have read this. I am scared.

BungoWomble · 17/02/2016 20:42

One small reassurance - what the heck is this news source? Never heard of them before. There's nothing on the BBC or the Telegraph about an imminent ground invasion, not I admit that that's a cast-iron guarantee that there isn't one (something about an explosion in Ankara and escorting Russian planes away from Britain). But frankly I am immediately suspicious of anything that says nukes are inevitable before a conflict has even started. The world has avoided them this far.

BungoWomble · 17/02/2016 20:46

The rest reads a bit OTT too, even by my standards, and anything saying 'share this immediately' is dubious imo. Don't panic me like that. Smile

Chippednailvarnish · 17/02/2016 20:47

What bungo said.

You can't believe 90% of what you see on the internet.

Itsallaboutme3 · 17/02/2016 21:05

Thanks bungo - that has reassured me. I am an anxious person and things like this scare me

finewine · 17/02/2016 21:18

Sorry Itsallaboutme for worrying you and thank you for that reassurance Bungo. I've always been a worrier but everything's on the internet these days and I get overwhelmed with constant news.

Thank you Chippednailvarnish

Don't worry, it is not that bad. The Russians won't use nukes and the Saudis haven't got that many troops and equipement and I haven't read about these "exercises".

If the exercises were true then it would be all over the alternative media and on Russia Today etc. I must admit I haven't watched Russia Today for months as I am following the Trump phenomenon.

The article is a mixture of truth and exaggeration. there is a lot of truth in there but there is also OTT exaggeration.

We are very close to a WWIII scenario but not in the way that article lays out. I think Turkey will invade Syria sometime soon under the pretext of setting up a safe zone etc and I think the Russian will probably react. At that point we will find out if we have a WWIII scenario if NATO joins in on the Turks' side.

My guess is that the Turks and Saudis are being tricked, they will enter Syria, they will not be helped and their regimes will fall. But I am only guessing.

It is dangerous times, but not as dangerous as that article says.

Thatrabbittrickedme · 17/02/2016 21:55

Hi OP, similar to pp, my first response is that I don't believe it's a credible source. When the BBC, Reuters, ITV etc start reporting this, then I would start to think there could be some truth in it.

I do believe these are very concerning times, but I don't think we are 18 days from nuclear war.

PhilPhilConnors · 17/02/2016 22:00

A bbc news article flashed up on FB about two Russian planes being escorted from UK airspace, the article says that Russia are just flexing their muscles and are no immediate threat, but why would they invade airspace?

I don't feel terribly anxious about it, but should I?

claig · 17/02/2016 22:01

If you want to get a handle on the type of things that are really going on, you are better off going to alternative media rather than BBC and newspapers etc.

A good political site with good contributions is Canadian Professor Chossudovsky's site

www.globalresearch.ca/

It is only speculation etc because no one really knows the full story of what is going on, but it is a good start.

A lot of articles on there are talking about a Turkish invasion coming soon. None of them mention my theory. We will have to wait and see what happens. No one really knows.

claig · 17/02/2016 22:03

'A bbc news article flashed up on FB about two Russian planes being escorted from UK airspace, the article says that Russia are just flexing their muscles and are no immediate threat, but why would they invade airspace?'

No these things happen quite a lot and the timing of the article seems to be part of the painting of bogeyman Russians etc.

Flowers Itsallaboutme I get a bit anxious myself, and this is not a good year for it. As Chippednailvarnish says most of the internet is rubbish.

This seems even more hysterical after some sleep. My dh immediately pointed out that Saudi Arabia does not have nuclear weapons. There are only 8 known states that do, plus possibly Israel, which is the only potential nuclear power in the near east. The nuclear non-proliferation treaty helps keep a lid on things.

The Russian planes being escorted out of our airspace happens regularly enough for it to be a standard procedure. They are sabre rattling, but they are talking to the West about military involvement in the near east.

These are not good times, but the only people who want war are the religious nutjobs.

BungoWomble · 18/02/2016 08:56

Ahem. For 'religious nutjobs' please read 'religious extremists'. Thinking of ISIS. Oops.

Orangeanddemons · 18/02/2016 09:00

Seems a bit sensationalist to me. Fwiw, those of us who were around in the 70s and 80s have heard it all before. It was much much scarier then than now...and yet we are still here...

claig · 25/02/2016 09:14

It turns out there is a massive Saudi exercise called "Northern Thunder" going on and there has been one report by a respected American journalist who said he had been told by an unnamed source (so cannot be verified) that Putin did threaten to use a tactical nuke against the Turks if there is a large ground invasion into Syria.

When the BBC, Reuters, ITV etc start reporting this, then I would start to think there could be some truth in it.

We really all need to stop relying on these establishment-influenced outlets for our information. When the mainstream media start reporting something, it simply means that it is now of benefit to those in charge of the mainstream media that they do so. And it is presented in exactly the way that will most benefit the most powerful players.
