I think it is fantastic that in this society we have such a thing as calculators and spell check etc.
Not everybody is good at maths, english etc and I cannot understand why anyone would begrudge someone having help.
Some people could do all the courses in the world and still not know how to work it out in their head.

I can add up and subtract, but nothing else. I love playing around with numbers - but they won't sit still in my head long enough for me to work out what I'm meant to do with them. I remember going up to the teacher when I was 7 to have help with long division, she explained it, I understood it. I'd forgotten how to do it by the time I sat down again and I sat there feeling all hot and ashamed and not daring to admit I couldn't do it I still can't do long division!

Words though - I can spell words I've never heard before, I don't remember learning to read because I could do it when I was not quite three, etc, etc - words are just what I am, really [ponce] Good job too, because with my number "skills" - well, I'd be unemployable if I couldn't do words!

See, now I can do the thing that you do with words, with numbers (as well as words - shame my grammar is shite). But, I couldnt make it look pretty on paper for the teachers, so, whilst I could give the answer for the long division, I couldnt do all the pretty working out, because I did it in my head.

DP is exactly like you with numbers, and letters. It took me 3 years for me to get DP to write out greetings cards himself. I have NO idea how long it would take to get him to sign up for a literacy/numeracy course, particularly given that he doesnt believe that any literacy or numeracy course would deal with the fundamental problem. Which of course is that he is dyslexic. For all the learning of rules etc, the letters and numbers would still jump around on the page.

helsyslittlehelper · 27/12/2006 22:33

Morningpaper - d'ya think?????????? . I think it's a great way of raising awareness of numeracy (or lack of it) - it doesn't seem to be mentioned in the press as often as literacy.

hunkermunker · 27/12/2006 22:57

DH is dyslexic too... Better with numbers than me though - mind you...!
