how much do you think this gimmic cost?

OP posts:
VeniVidiVickiQV · 27/12/2006 21:21

LGJ - yes - its a waste of money, generally speaking.

Trying to encourage people back into an education system that has severely let them down - well, its like trying to encourage a person to stroke a dog that has bitten them on the arse.

Of the two options - a calculator or stroke the bad dog...hmmm.

nutcracker · 27/12/2006 21:21

I can sometimes do it in my head depending on what the percentage is and I can do it on a calculator eventually, but not in a shop full of people.

SherlockLGJ · 27/12/2006 21:21

QV

Re Mr QV,I don't doubt it for a minute, but you have to agree, calculators in the middle of the sales are not the way to go, long term solutions surely ????

morningpaper · 27/12/2006 21:22

But Sherlock this is part of a CAMPAIGN

The Get On CAMPAIGN is purely MARKETING to RAISE AWARENESS of the Government's Adult Literacy project.

The Government can't just create a massive literacy drive without MARKETING it! That's all this is - and all the original article was looked like a reproduction of a DfES Press Release.

nutcracker · 27/12/2006 21:22

I'd rather have a free maths lesson than a calculator tbh.

SherlockLGJ · 27/12/2006 21:22

Right I can see the way this is going and I am offski.

Goodnight everybody.

misdee · 27/12/2006 21:23

it is part of a campaign yes. and we have all seen those course things advertised havent we? the ones with the gremlims?

morningpaper · 27/12/2006 21:24

in fact - lol - here is the original Press Release!

misdee · 27/12/2006 21:25

get-on

morningpaper · 27/12/2006 21:26

Nutcracker there are plenty of free maths lessons available to adults

May I draw your attention to the Government's "Get On" campaign by offering you one of these free handy calculators?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 27/12/2006 21:26

x-posts LGJ - I do agree that its not enough.

expatinscotland · 27/12/2006 21:27

Nothing to be ashamed of, nutty!

Absolutely none.

I'd be happy to help.

Got an email addy?

Blossomgoodwill · 27/12/2006 21:27

I am sickened by some of the attitudes on this thread.
So fucking what if they use calculators. Some people have learning problems no matter what and if this helps them then what is the problem????

expatinscotland · 27/12/2006 21:28

A calculator would be useless to my own DH!

I just asked him!

He wouldn't know how to compute it.

He told me to my face.

He doesn't know how to do it.

Not that he can't. That he doesn't know how.

That's the difference.

That's what I always told my literacy students. Don't you DARE tell me you 'can't'!. You haven't learned how, barring learning disabilities, and even then.

morningpaper · 27/12/2006 21:29

I suspect that these "calculators" are just bits of paper with examples btw, rather than Pentium IVs

'Tis just an advertisement for adult learning

Blossomgoodwill · 27/12/2006 21:32

If it goes a little bit to helping someone who struggles is it really such a big deal.
We pay lots of tax and I am more than happy if it helps someone, who just might also pay tax too!

nutcracker · 27/12/2006 21:32

LOL MP

Don't worry I am not ashamed and I can do math when I am sat down and shown slowly and properly and it's only complicated stuff i struggle with not very basic stuff.

I am scared of maths really tbh.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 27/12/2006 21:33

Not everyone is like your DH, expat.

There are many and varied reasons why people struggle with maths.

Using a calculator is an absolute godsend for some folk.

nutcracker · 27/12/2006 21:34

I have to agree that having a calculator isn't really adressing the problem, i have one and am still rubbish at maths.

SherlockLGJ · 27/12/2006 21:35

Oh God, this is my last word on the subject.

If people have learning problems they should be geven help to learn, not patronised with a calculator.

LGJ shuts the door as she leaves.

SherlockLGJ · 27/12/2006 21:35

given.

morningpaper · 27/12/2006 21:37

They ARE given help to learn

The Government spends millions on adult learning

The fact that you don't realise this means that they need to do some sort of marketing campaign

misdee · 27/12/2006 21:39

a calculator is a tool in learning surely?

hunkermunker · 27/12/2006 21:39

I can do words.

I can't do numbers.

I'd like a calculator.

misdee · 27/12/2006 21:40

hunker i can do both, dh struggles with both. my mum can do neither, my dad is a whizz at maths.
