how much do you think this gimmic cost?

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 27/12/2006 20:41

A lot of people are barely literate as well.

'Txtspk', anyone?

What a fucking shame.

I taught and tutored adult literacy for years. The maths tutors were real heroes, though.

SherlockLGJ · 27/12/2006 20:45

I am so glad my DH works his fu*King arse off to give Gordon 40p in the £ to pay for this shite.

If they can't work it out. F*ing tough, they get it wrong once and they will work it out. PDQ

Nanny State anyone.......God doncha just love New Labour ?????

expatinscotland · 27/12/2006 20:46

Yes, I agree, Sherlock.

I don't enjoy lining Gordon's pockets anymore than the next person.

I can't wait to go to the polls. It was worth that silly 'Life in the UK' test an' all.

pantomimEdam · 27/12/2006 20:49

I think it's a good attempt to reach people who wouldn't normally come forward and admit they have a problem.

expatinscotland · 27/12/2006 20:50

Shame the school system let them down.

misdee · 27/12/2006 20:51

i think its a good idea. so many people spent years hiding the fact that their maths and literacy skills are below par.

charliecat · 27/12/2006 20:53

Oh come on, give them a shite education then give them a fucking calculator ...its poor.
The 200,000 who take the calculators will drop them on the floor within the hour and an extra cleaning man or 20 will be contracted in to deal with the mess made.

OP posts:
SherlockLGJ · 27/12/2006 20:54

So use the funds to send them back to education and help them, not give them a quick fix soloution in the middle of the sales. Waste of money IMO

expatinscotland · 27/12/2006 20:55

Here, here! Sherlock for PM!

DecktheWallacewithBoughsofHoll · 27/12/2006 20:58

Heard this on the news and asked ds how much something would cost if it had been £100 and now had 20% off. He got it right and hasn't even done percentages in school yet

maisym · 27/12/2006 20:59

why not teach this at school?

expatinscotland · 27/12/2006 21:00

DH would never, never get the correct answer .

SherlockLGJ · 27/12/2006 21:00

Because Tony and his overpaid cronies would not get as much praise for it.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 27/12/2006 21:04

I cant see DP wanting to go back to school. It's not as easy as that.

When he was at school, oooh, a hundred years ago or so; yes, they should have spotted his dyslexia, no, they shouldnt have called him stupid. He's hardly likely to go back there for what could end up being the same treatment. Or worse still, have some patronising fucker think he doesnt understand his own difficulties.

Gimmics no. Flippancy about how to best solve this problem - abhorrant to those who suffer it.

morningpaper · 27/12/2006 21:04

Cor you lot are never happy

LOTS of people have terrible maths skills - would you prefer it if the Nanny State just left them alone to feck up their finances, like the poor people who got shafted by Farepak?

misdee · 27/12/2006 21:06

200,000 calculators on offer, does it say free? no. on offer yes, free no.

SherlockLGJ · 27/12/2006 21:06

A calculator in the middle of the sales is not the answer.

expatinscotland · 27/12/2006 21:09

Even w/a calculator, you still have to know to calculate this. A lot of people don't!

SherlockLGJ · 27/12/2006 21:10

I rest my case.

expatinscotland · 27/12/2006 21:13

It's such a basic thing. Or so I thought.

And leads to good people being ripped off, which really makes me b/c I was lucky enough to have a good mind and a good education.

I want to be sick and cry for children who don't.

This belongs, for the future generation, in school.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 27/12/2006 21:15

People might not be good with maths. It doesnt make them complete fecking dimwits who cant use a calculator, FFS!

DP works as an IT support specialist. He specialises in hardware and re-installation of software.

He couldnt tell you, in his head, how much 20% off £100 was.

Im pretty sure he could work out a calculator. 100 - 20% =.

SherlockLGJ · 27/12/2006 21:17

I am leaving this thread now.

I consider it to be a waste of money.

There must be ways of getting people back to education, online courses, distance learning....

But that IMO was a woeful waste of taxpayers money.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 27/12/2006 21:18

And he could do things you couldnt begin to imagine with your computer, should it go wrong.

I think, you need to review what you consider a person with poor maths/reading skills to be, exactly.

nutcracker · 27/12/2006 21:20

Stupid idea and I am crap at maths.

misdee · 27/12/2006 21:20

you know something, i cant remember how to work out % o na calculater. but i can do it in my head quickly. dh cant do it without a calculator.
