Women's safety in Europe after Cologne

DavidTCDaviesMP · 08/02/2016 09:38

I have been invited onto Mumsnet to discuss the situation for women in Europe following the attacks in Cologne, and the challenge we face in Europe in trying to help millions of mainly young men, who are arriving in Europe from cultures which treat women very differently. I believe this is an issue which needs open discussion by political leaders yet is swept under the carpet. David Davies MP

I think support for this issue will grow if attacks continue. Sad way to gain support, but true.

The EU will continue to deny there is an issue of course but public momentum will increase.

LumelaMme · 08/02/2016 14:54

Had anyone else watched the video David Davies posted at 13:55:37?

God, it's depressing.

At one point a man explains to the woman making the film (he's a friend of hers) that because the youths who do the catcalling and so on are not taught about sex and sexuality and can have nothing to do with women in their own culture, yet see naked women on billboards all the time, and so the pressure is just too much for them.

I don't think that's an adequate explanation: Stamford Hill is a pretty safe place to walk through (or it used to be, in daylight, when I worked there) despite the many men there who live in a sexually repressive culture. My employer came from that culture (Chassidic Jew). He never made a single suggestive comment or so much as touched me. He was always very polite to me, would have a conversation, have a laugh.

Plus, in some Arab countries where you don't get so many half-naked women on billboards, there are still huge issues about women's freedom to walk unmolested down the street.

Also ([personal gripe here), part of the way through a woman said you get this kind of thing in Africa. Not in the bits of Africa I grew up in you didn't. I did have a man try it on with me on a crowded bus once, and the women in the seat behind gave him a huge earful and the man the other side drew me into polite and respectful conversation - the arsehole man was completely cut out and made the object of much disapproval. It was GREAT.

Inkanta · 08/02/2016 14:57

As they say - the truth will out and the truths are pretty much out of the bag now - and cannot be shoved back in.

David Davies has corroborated many truths here today, and it's truths that set you free in the end and enable things to move forward from here

We should have a moment to celebrate getting to this stage. There has been thread after thread of treading through treacle attempting to establish the truth of the matter- and here we are!

Cheers Wine

"socio-economic rather than cultural issue."

but this is class it then isn't it? Why is being class it ok?

The fact that European 'feminists' rejected the documentary by sofia as racist says it all doesn't it? Criticising cultural practices and factors that are harmful should always be acceptable. cultures are choice, ethnicity, race not so much.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3437252/Twelve-men-repeatedly-gang-raped-abused-vulnerable-teenage-schoolgirl-saw-utterly-worthless-jailed-total-140-YEARS.htm

An arrogant gang of 12 men have been jailed for a total of 140 years for the repeated rape and sexual abuse of a vulnerable schoolgirl they saw as 'utterly worthless'.Eleven were jailed for rape and a twelfth man was jailed for sexual activity with a child under 16 today at Bradford Crown Court.
Their white British victim was aged 13 and 14 when she was repeatedly raped and sexually abused and passed around by the Asian men.

Hope they get what they deserve in jail.

*but this is classist. autocorrect didn't like this word

ExitPursuedByABear · 08/02/2016 15:02

Damn I missed it.

vladimirsoftless · 08/02/2016 15:38

Meanwhile the BBC does not even mention the conviction of 12 men who raped vulnerable school girls. It is evidently not newsworthy for the British Broadcast Corporation. Hmm

They also did not report (at least not on the homepage) on the trial of a gang of Somali men who raped a british teenager this week.

There were happy to report about a white child abuser only a few days ago, however
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-35430340

Biased, is it not?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 08/02/2016 16:02

Yes of course they're biased, but to be fair the BBC have just put something up about the convictions in Bradford:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-35524340

AMouseLivedinaWindMill · 08/02/2016 16:05

The judge said that their behaviour throughout the trial was the worst he has seen in 40 years

Considering they will be out in less than those terms, those sentances are not very long.
I just think as a society we need to really come down hard on child abusers, this is telling off not coming down hard.

MariscallRoad · 08/02/2016 16:37

I ve posted this in the other thread www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-02-06/merkel-says-eu-must-take-in-refugees-directly-from-turkey
worth reading

BrittEkland · 08/02/2016 16:52

vlad The Bradford rape trial.
I am going to read the article in full later on. Many Hindus and Sikhs do not like this unattached word "Asian" being used in reports such as this. They would like journalists to qualify who they are talking about, i.e. Asian Muslim.

Kummerspeck · 08/02/2016 17:08

Sadly I think that anyone looking through these threads looking for racism will find it where none was intended because of their mindset. Indeed, to some left wing groups, just discussing this is racist...

MariscallRoad · 08/02/2016 17:22

Lumela I ve seen this video. And I have known similar things happening in EU months ago see this link here www.thelocal.de/20150626/refugee-school-calls-for-uniform-modesty

MamaMary · 08/02/2016 17:30

Mariscall, that article about the school in Bavaria telling school girls to cover up has made me angry.

So the school principal says it's 'two cultures coming together' here. So WHY should the German women's culture change? Why should young girls be forced to accommodate the refugees? Why not tell the refugees that it is unacceptable to ogle or touch any girl, and if they do there will be severe consequences.

Why is it just accepted that women pay the price? It's eroding their rights. I would be livid if this was my children's school.

BrittEkland · 08/02/2016 17:35

This is my error. I thought we were speaking with the Tory backbencher David Davis today, a much older man. But we got David Davies, MP for Monmouth.

MariscallRoad · 08/02/2016 17:36

MamaMary I ve known these things were going on since summer and I was angry.

AgentCooper · 08/02/2016 17:39

The more I think about this, the more I see it as not a racist issue but a women's issue (though others are at risk, but it's far, far more likely to be women who take the hit, as ever).

I am about as pro- multiculturalism as you can get. My job involves helping people from all over the world, many from ME and N Africa, get study visas. And I've made loads of good friends, male and female, from Saudi, Iraq, Libya, Kurdistan, Morocco, through my work.

The Libyan Muslim women I know do not want to be afraid to go out to the continental market or shopping centre alone or in pairs. Some of the Saudi women I know don't wear hijab in the UK and wouldn't be identifiable as Muslim. These women are as worried as any of us about sexual violence and not feeling safe. This is so much a women's issue.

MrsGradyOldLady · 08/02/2016 17:40

I'd be livid too but I wouldn't want my daughters to be sexually assaulted either so I would comply. The authorities have already shown they can't keep women and girls safe.

LumelaMme · 08/02/2016 18:06

the more I see it as not a racist issue but a women's issue
That's exactly it, Cooper. It's nothing to do with race. Not that you would know it from the insults flung about on these threads.

januarybrown1998 · 08/02/2016 18:08

The more I think about this, the more I see it as not a racist issue but a women's issue

Exactly. If it were about race, we'd have concerns and reservations about all immigration and all refugees.

In fact, I have yet to see a single report of a female asylum seeker sexually assaulting anyone. Or gangs of female migrants catcalling, sexually harassing, storming ferries, grooming vulnerable girls of white, Sikh or Hindi origin or otherwise intimidating anyone.

It's a sensitive, nuanced, culture-centric gender-specific debate but it's not about race.

vladimirsoftless · 08/02/2016 18:08

Sadly I don't think that wearing jeans and jumpers instead of shorts and t-shirt will prevent any rapes whatsoever. I doubt that the elderly women (73 years) in Austria who was raped by a migrant wore provocative clothing. She just happened to walk by walking her dog. Imagine, having lived your life for over 70 years and be caught out by some appalling human being who attacks you in the most horrific way. How is this woman going to recover?

Also, young girls are lovely whatever they wear and will catch the attention of these guys in duffle coat and wellington boots.

And last, they attack boys as well.
