Women's safety in Europe after Cologne

DavidTCDaviesMP · 08/02/2016 09:38

I have been invited onto Mumsnet to discuss the situation for women in Europe following the attacks in Cologne, and the challenge we face in Europe in trying to help millions of mainly young men, who are arriving in Europe from cultures which treat women very differently. I believe this is an issue which needs open discussion by political leaders yet is swept under the carpet. David Davies MP

Britt I would have agreed with you until recently when I became friendly with someone in the media and learned that they do sit on a lot of stories for their own agendas

MamaMary · 08/02/2016 13:15

Thank you Mr Davies for coming on to MN. Your interest in this issue is much appreciated.

I don't wish to de-rail this thread, or go off-topic, so feel free not to answer this. I just wondered if you had any thoughts on the extremely concerning decision made by the Olympic committee to allow transgender competitors to compete as the gender of their choosing pre-operatively and after just one year of hormone treatment.

This is another issue that people daren't speak out on due to political correctness and fear of being labelled 'transphobic' (in this case). But this decision is extremely unfair to women athletes.

David, do you have any suggestions about what we could do? We've written to our MPs (no reply at all from mine - do I bother following him up?). We've set up a petition which is getting a steady trickle of signatures but not exactly drawing mass support. We're being shouted down by people who seem to think that anyone worried about uncontrolled immigration into Europe is a closet Nazi.

Where do we go from here?

DavidTCDaviesMP · 08/02/2016 13:17

I know many of you have signed the petition but it needs a lot more signatures to get a govt response. That would be a start.

AnnaForbes: I think it is more likely to be about avoiding a backlash against politicians who have allowed unlimited mass migration with no thought for the consequences.

David I like your honest replies - thank you.

BrittEkland · 08/02/2016 13:18

David - Would you agree that changing a mindset such as the one in a male from ME-NA will take several generations. What do we do in the meantime? One was quoted recently as saying "Of course women have to do what men want" - as if it is a laughable suggestion to do otherwise.

DavidTCDaviesMP · 08/02/2016 13:18

MamaMary I am sorry but don't know enough about it

This happens everywhere. I've found it in academic history books: the axe is ground regardless of the evidence available in sources cited by the bloody author. Finding this has really damaged my faith in the human race.

januarybrown1998 · 08/02/2016 13:20

David, are the UK police likely to be (or have been?) briefed against reacting, in the way the German ones did at New Year?

If so, do you suggest we email ACPO people?

AMouseLivedinaWindMill · 08/02/2016 13:20

Dear David, today David Cameron said the calais camp would have to move to Britain in the face of a Brexit, is that true or scaremongering?

DavidTCDaviesMP · 08/02/2016 13:20

BrittEkland to start with I would make it absolutely clear that anyone abusing rights of women gays or any other minority would lose refugee status and be deported immediately. Show that we are serious and people will soon get the message.

Good afternoon Mr Davies and thank you for taking part. David Cameron has said that if we leave the EU we will be seeing camps of migrants being set up in Kent. As we are worried about more migrants with other cultures to ours coming here do you see this as a possibility?

Moreshabbythanchic · 08/02/2016 13:21

x post with Mouse

DavidTCDaviesMP · 08/02/2016 13:22

JanuaryBrown: don't know I hope not. Here we have a more open press and Freedom of Info Act so less likely. (hope I am not being naively optimistic)

How and why did the authotrities fail to protect children as young as 10 and women in so many attacks in several European cities? Is it possile to have a EU wide enquiry how this happened and what are the failing?

LumelaMme · 08/02/2016 13:23

God, it's so nice to have a politician admitting he doesn't know stuff, hoping he's not being naive and generally behaving like a proper human being!

Rather than flanneling and speaking in soundbites and sounding like something from the Borg.

AnnaForbes · 08/02/2016 13:24

I think it is more likely to be about avoiding a backlash against politicians who have allowed unlimited mass migration with no thought for the consequences.

I am still curious about the hidden agenda here. There was always going to be an inevitable backlash. I'm not one for conspiracy theory but I cant believe this was done with no thought for the long term consequences and so I would like to know what those long term consequences are. I can see decades of slow progress for women's equality being wiped out very quickly.

DavidTCDaviesMP · 08/02/2016 13:25

Moreshabbythanchic and others: I do not want to accuse my boss of "scaremongering" he is basically saying that French are blackmailing us to stay in EU or face miss illegal migration. That doesn't make me want to stay. Also The 2003 Le Touquet treaty does not cover Portsmouth, Plymouth, Poole yet there are no camps at ports on the other side.

David, thank you for being prepared to talk about this. My MP responded very nicely to my concerns but would not discuss either women's rights or anything to do with immigration - the denial about this is frightening!

My question to you would be why racism is seen as the ultimate shut down by the government? We cannot talk about women's rights being eroded by a large and abrupt entry of single men into the EU who are demonstrating their beliefs about women and their intention of living by them. Why is there such a refusal to engage? Surely when - and unfortunately I think it will be when - we see a Taharrush incident in the UK the backlash will be terrifying, much worse than if the government were prepared to address this up front. Why does there seem to be an expectation that women will hand over freedom, safety and make cultural changes to accomodate actions that are not supported by law or philosophy in the UK, and will do this enthusiastically because to voice minding about it is racist?

LumelaMme · 08/02/2016 13:25

I like Mari's question about an EU-wide enquiry. Can such things happen?

BrittEkland · 08/02/2016 13:25

Mr Davies, you say "anyone abusing rights of women gays or any other minority would lose refugee status and be deported immediately."

That's great, but deporting to where? Those responsible for sex attacks deliberately destroyed ID papers before arrival. In fact, WHERE could we deport unverified migrants who refuse to live by the law of a European nation.

MamaMary · 08/02/2016 13:26

Thank you for mentioning the Freedom of Information Act and its importance. I know some Tories (and probably politicians from other parties too) want to water it down, or get rid altogether.

Inkanta · 08/02/2016 13:27

Yes, the German government have allowed unlimited mass migration with no thought for the consequences haven't they?

What are your thoughts on this?

DavidTCDaviesMP · 08/02/2016 13:28

BrittEkland - I would use foreign aid budget to build camps in safe countries in North Africa and Middle East, then pay the govts to recieve people who cant be deported to their own country.

OP posts:
DavidTCDaviesMP · 08/02/2016 13:29

Inkata - yes they said they would welcome everyone who could make to to Germany, they unleashed a wave of illegal migration and now they want everyone else in the EU to share the burden. Crazy.
