Baby Charlotte to leave hospital

Charlotte is to be discharged from hospital "imminently"
Severely disabled Charlotte Wyatt is to be discharged from hospital to go into foster care.
Charlotte, from Portsmouth, Hampshire, has spent the first three years of her life in hospital.

She was at the centre of a court case to decide if doctors had to resuscitate her if her condition worsened.

Stuart Gallimore, of Portsmouth City Council, said: "It is anticipated that she will be discharged imminently" and cared for by experienced foster carers.

Parents separated

Charlotte, who was born three months early, is severely brain-damaged, almost blind and deaf, and unable to walk or crawl.

When she was born, doctors gave her only a 5% chance of survival.

Charlotte's parents, Darren and Debbie Wyatt, fought a long legal battle in the High Court to force doctors to resuscitate her if her condition deteriorated.

But contrary to doctors' predictions her condition improved and her life-expectancy is now measured in months and years, instead of days and months.

Charlotte's parents separated in February of this year after the situation with their daughter put a strain on their marriage.

Since neither parent is considered able to cope with the demands of looking after Charlotte, the local authority stepped in to arrange the outcome for her round-the-clock needs.
