I was very pleased to hear this news this morning too. He won't be sentenced till next year though. I hope that his "house arrest" is heavily guarded as he's obviously a serious flight risk.

I've just read that it will be Judge Masipa, the original judge, who will resentence him, taking into account time served and any mitigating factors put forward by his lawyers.

I couldn't believe Masipa's verdict at the time. The dogs on the street could see he was guilty of murder!
Murder carries a minimum of 15 years apparently. So he will serve at least 6 years apparently.

According to this page www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-34993002 "The minimum sentence for murder is 15 years, but the judge does have the discretion to lower it. So if Judge Masipa can lower it, the minimum osn't 15 years at all! That's shocking.

South Africa's Supreme Court of Appeal ruled that the lower court did not correctly apply the rule of dolus eventualis - whether Pistorius knew that a death would be a likely result of his actions.

Of course the bastard knew what he was doing, it's just that he has money to fight and influence.

Incidentally, a lot of news sitesreports and newspaper sites are saying that 15 years is the maximum sentence for murder in South Africa. I hope that's not true, but haven't got time to find out which is right at the moment.

"At least 12 years of which he must serve 6 before being considered for parole." according to the South African lawyer being interviewed on Sky News just now. Obviously that would be after time served and any mitigation that will be taken into account. 12 years isn't enough, and 6 would be appalling.

Well, there is apparently still change for Pistorius to appeal so it might not happen.

He apparently spent a fortune in legal costs in the first trial including having to sell his house so there's speculation he may not have the funds for a further appeal. His family too have only made a brief noncommittal comment which of course may mean nothing in terms of his intentions but on the face of it it's not looking hopeful.

Apparently he has ten days to lodge an appeal if he's going to so not long to wait to see. I'm quite surprised he hasn't been returned straight to prison though. Surely he must be a flight or suicide risk?

I see he's been granted bail until April 2016. Can someone explain to me why bail even comes into the equation when he's supposed to be under house arrest anyway? And why so long to decide on the sentencing?
