Do you think we have a 'yes' vote to bomb Syria by this evening...?

Am feeling quite depressed by it all :(

OP posts:
needastrongone · 02/12/2015 18:56

I also don't know any single person who supports the additional bombing. I then listened to an MP saying this was indeed the case in his constituency, but he was going to ignore this as he had more information to hand than the general electorate!!

squidzin · 02/12/2015 18:56

Interesting the the NUS has unanimously voted against bombing Syria. But who gives a fuck about them.

I guarantee this "information" your MP has is total bullshit. There is no clear case, no proven facts and no strategy.

polentapies · 02/12/2015 19:10

Yet the media are pushing the idea that bombing is the popular view. Not here (MN) it seems (yes yes, I know the term anecdotal)

TBH, I reckon many MPs have only a fraction of scooby of WTF is going on. It's a quagmire in Syria. DC's comments re 'terrorist sympathisers'

squidzin · 02/12/2015 19:14

Politicians as a breed, have a defective gene that makes them want to commit mass murder which is why they become politicians, rather than normal people.

You cannot trust a single thing they say.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 02/12/2015 19:18

Theres no vote, really. It's a charade to make the public believe that the people we vote for make a difference.

We have no choice but to support our allies against ISIS. Not really. So it will happen and the yes vote will win, regardless of anyone's individual opinion, and that includes the MPs

To be honest, I think MN attracts a lot of people who wouldn't support bombing anywhere (perhaps because it's mostly mothers, and therefore generally more peaceful?) but I also think those on MN who would support the bombing wouldn't dare say so. Like Tory voters.

TrojanWhore · 02/12/2015 19:21

Remember all the threads after the general election about how there just couldn't be a Tory majority because there wasn't any support on MN, and those MNtters who did post said they didn't know any Tory voters in RL. MN was simply not representative.

And then some MNetters said (when asked) why right-wingers don't bother to post on these MN threads because there was no debate, just a howling down? And the threads went on for hundreds of posts, because some posters just did not see the dynamic.

Well, it's happening again.

"We have no choice but to support our allies against ISIS. Not really. So it will happen and the yes vote will win, regardless of anyone's individual opinion, and that includes the MPs"

I think we do have a choice actually. If we didn't there wouldn't be anyone at a senior level debating over this. We did not actually have to support our 'allies' (i.e. puppet masters, the US) and go into Iraq, or into Afghanistan, and we don't here. Plus, there are other ways of supporting our allies than simply dropping bombs. We could investigate the damned funding!

polentapies · 02/12/2015 19:55

Again, show me the polls. I can't see it

claig · 02/12/2015 20:02

'TBH, I reckon many MPs have only a fraction of scooby of WTF is going on'

I agree. They are good on Sure Start but useless on this and the Iraq War when they believed Blair's dodgy dossier. They believe anything they are told. Julian Lewis, Tory MP, on the Defence Select Committee, is excellent but most of them are Sure Start experts and haven't got the foggiest about the complexities of this.

museumum · 02/12/2015 20:06

what is with the BBC on this??? they seem determined to represent the yes vote as the majority by far and no as only crazy corbyn (still dont' get why the bbc seem to hate him so much???)

I lost faith in the bbc at the scottish referendum (my god they didn't have a clue what the issues were people actually cared about) but now i'm just bamboozled!!

claig · 02/12/2015 20:08

'they seem determined to represent the yes vote as the majority by far and no as only crazy corbyn (still dont' get why the bbc seem to hate him so much???)'

The BBC is a state funded broadcaster, they have to support the Establishment. Corbyn is a threat to the Establishment which is why he is unpopular with them.

'I lost faith in the bbc at the scottish referendum'

The Establishment again.

Cleansheetsandbedding · 02/12/2015 20:12

It's going to happen. Cameron's been gagging for it since last year. There was a Syrian activist (I think) on sky being interviewed and she was adamant that it was actually Assad that was the worst threat?...

claig · 02/12/2015 20:15

'There was a Syrian activist (I think) on sky being interviewed and she was adamant that it was actually Assad that was the worst threat?...'

She seems to be the only one the Establishment always goes to. She was on Channel 4 News, and on BBC Newsnight yesterday. She is useful for the Establishment in backing up the Establishment's "Assad must go" argument, when Assad is the only one with enough troops on the ground to defeat Isis.

Teenagecrisisagain · 02/12/2015 20:19

My dd1 (14) was off school ill today and talking about this, she was really upset and said "why do they want to bomb them. It won't get rid of them. You can bomb buildings and people and things but you can't bomb an idea or what these people believe in"

Sadly I think she's right and I wish she didn't have to worry about this sort of thing at her age

YesterdayOnceMore · 02/12/2015 20:33

Regarding bullying/lobbying of the Labour MPs: this all boils down to whether you believe your 5 yearly vote when you choose your MP is your say in politics and after that you trust the person you elected to make decisions on your behalf- and if they make decisions you don't like, you vote for someone else at the next general election. Or if an MP is the person chosen by consistuants to represent their ongoing views in parliament and therefore they have a right to lobby them with their opinions.

Cleansheetsandbedding · 02/12/2015 20:37

claig I've never seen her before. She seemed quiet difficult to converse with.

claig · 02/12/2015 20:49

'claig I've never seen her before'

She is a constant fixture on our TV channels. They have no one else they interview on it. Not a single Syrian is ever shown with a different point of view. She often lectures our MPs (the Sure Start experts) and they all nod their heads in agreement with her. OF course, it doesn't wash with the public, only with the MPs.

Shutthatdoor · 02/12/2015 21:45

Politicians as a breed, have a defective gene that makes them want to commit mass murder which is why they become politicians, rather than normal people.

What a quite frankly ridiculous thing to say.

Funinthesun15 · 02/12/2015 21:50

Or if an MP is the person chosen by consistuants to represent their ongoing views in parliament and therefore they have a right to lobby them with their opinions.

There is a difference between lobbying and bullying.

The stuff that has been thrown at Mike Gapes MP for example because he is for but is seriously ill at the moment in hospital is quite frankly disgusting. People saying he deserved to be ill etc.

Stella Creasy has had all sorts of crap thrown at her as has John Woodcock and Dan Jarvis.

MPs have had threatening emails, staff abused down the phone.

Non of this is acceptable and I can't see how anyone can condone it.

IPityThePontipines · 02/12/2015 22:25

Assad is the main threat.

Assad is the one who created ISIS in Syria.

Assad and his allies are the ones killing more civilians than anyone else.

All bombing ISIS will do is ensure Assad stays in power even longer.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 02/12/2015 22:32

Fuck Sad

claig · 02/12/2015 22:32

397 to 223, big majority for air strikes

Travelledtheworld · 02/12/2015 22:32

Fuck. How can any reasonably intelligent person vote yes ?
