I like the ending - ignore others and you're happy. That works for me. Comparisons with others tend not to make people happy.

Perhaps it is the US centric view that I find problematic? The writer implores Lucy to make a start. She is heading towards 40 by my calculations. She should have done it already and if she hasn't no wonder she is unhappy.
