Very sensible Breastfeeding advisor on This Morning

Called Clare something, did anyone see it? Stated that lots of people find it difficult (at last) and that many midwives still give totally the wrong advice about how to latch on, so no wonder. I never even knew that you were supposed to 'shape' your breast then put it in baby's mouth. Wish I'd known that 2 years ago - it would have saved me months of agony. Shame on all those bad advisors out there.

I suppose it depends on what your problem is. I have never shaped my breast to get the baby to latch on, so that piece of advice might possibly have caused me problems if I'd followed it. I have no doubt that there are bad advisors. However, you might consider an advisor to be bad if she gave you strategies which simply didn't work for you. Others might consider that particular advisor to be the bee's knees if those same strategies worked for them.

Horses for courses.

I did have to "shape" my boob, as ds wouldn't open his mouth. That was the advice the bf specialist midwife gave me and it really helped. But I suppose that's the point - that was 1:1 advice and specific to my and my ds' requirements.

I am sure if I hadn't had access to the bf support group, I might have then been exposed to HVs and possibly pressure to stop bf or to mixed feed as ds dropped through the centiles. As it was, I had nothing but support - plus inspiration from other mums at the support group who had also had problems and persevered.
