Mr Irwin was in the news recently because he, well, died. Some say he was an amazing man who did a lot for animal conservation. Others say he was an exhibitionist, an egotist, even dangerous. What do you think? .

OP posts:

without even reading your link will say YES.

i never visited the oh dear he is dead threads out of respect to another human being. i never said it out loud but i always thought he had it coming.

heavenlyghosty · 30/11/2006 22:59

I enjoyed watching that ... very informative, interesting and entertaining too ...
LOL at the 'place to park a bike' comment
I liked Steve Irwin ... I don't care what other people think. He brought Conservation to millions of children around the world - that can't be a bad thing surely?

What a charming poll.

santasdoingtheironing · 30/11/2006 23:01

Why are you posting this twice??

VeniVidiVickiQV · 30/11/2006 23:02

Valid discussion, IMO.

WGW is not a troll.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 30/11/2006 23:05

I dont think he was a complete idiot.

I think that he did many good things, and, as a crusader for conservation - he took no more risks than the woman who "gorilla's in the mist" was based on, or any other conservationist.

kiskidee · 30/11/2006 23:06

gorillas don't eat people or have venom.

Saturn74 · 30/11/2006 23:07

Do stingrays eat people?

kiskidee · 30/11/2006 23:10

no. they don't eat people but have a venomous spine at the base of their tails - which if brought up to chest level, can jab you in the chest and send a big dose of venom straight to the heart.

FestivelyFrostyFloss · 30/11/2006 23:10

Two things strike me.

How sad that he is dead.

and, we should by all means try and learn about animals but it should not be done as tricks for a crowd.

kiskidee · 30/11/2006 23:11

normally if this venom is gotten though the foot - as MAY happen if you step on one, the poison is distributed throughout the leg and never really affects the heart.

kiskidee · 30/11/2006 23:12

my 'eat people' comment was a reference to the crocs he would harrass for all and sundry.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 30/11/2006 23:21

The stingray was a freak accident. How many folk have been killed by them since records began?

How much has he done to protect the crocodile's environment.

He may have "harrassed some crocs for all and sundry", but it brought the attention and the money to help save them. They were hardly made to dress up and have a tea party.

kiskidee · 30/11/2006 23:24

holding a stingray at chest level like that makes it less of a freak accident imho.

the american crocodile was brought back from the brink of extinction which they faced in the seventies without dressing them up for tea parties.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 30/11/2006 23:28

He wasnt holding the stingray!!!!

Have you seen the size of them anyway?

kiskidee · 30/11/2006 23:38

what was he doing with it then?

yes, i know the size of them. i've lived a lot of my life in the caribbean.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 30/11/2006 23:45

Filming - under water obv. They think it felt threatened because the cameraman was one side and he was the other apparently. Freak accident.

SaintGeorge · 30/11/2006 23:45

He was swimming above it, in open waters. Stingrays hide and react defensively when disturbed.

He accidently disturbed it, the ray reacted, he was unlucky enough to take a direct hit.

kiskidee · 30/11/2006 23:49

hmm, was the footage shown? i know there was a hoopla on whether or not it was supposed to be shown.

i have spend a huge amount of time (relatively) in the sea with stingrays and have never heard that if you are diving over them that they are liable to react this way.

Fattymumma · 30/11/2006 23:49

he was passionate about conservation, enthusiastic about teaching children and his love for animals showed in every interview or piece to camara.

to all of those who claim he was an idiot or "had it coming" i would say simply this....you know his name, you know what made him famnous and whether you like him or not i betyou there are at least 3 facts that you know becasue of him that you wouldn't have otherwise.

he had the ability to appeal to young chidlren, to make conservation fun and interesting.
he was an amazing man who died doing what he loved.

kiskidee · 30/11/2006 23:51

sorry fattymumma, can't think of three facts. not just saying that btw.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 01/12/2006 00:05

Well indeed - thats why its such a freak accident. He had no reason to think he was in any real danger.

suzywong · 01/12/2006 00:10

complete idiot

of course now I have typed that from where I am a lynch mob will be gathering at my door

But that's what I think

idiot

kiskidee · 01/12/2006 00:10

but was the footage shown? still won't believe it till then. sceptic that i am.
