Woman killed on escalator in China.

I'm afraid video on the link is distressing.

The way she instinctively saves her son is... heartbreaking.

I don't understand who the people are that seem to be waiting for her at the top of the escalator, it's almost as though they are waiting for it to happen.

Rest In Peace.

From here china.org.cn/china/2015-07/27/content_36157254.htm

"..the attendants gathered at the end of the escalator to inform the victim that the panel on the end was loose and dangerous.

But the warning from the store attendants was already too late. It's impossible for a mom travelling with a kid to walk back on an ascending escalator"

What? the attendants aren't warning her at all. And I should think the mum could have scrambled back down the escalator if the alternative was... well, what happened.

Oh my god that's fucking awful!

She could so easily have ran back down, but I guess they didn't know that bit was going to collapse, poor poor woman :(

ladygracie · 30/07/2015 22:12

Oh that's horrific. Poor poor woman.

Superworm · 31/07/2015 08:31

Poor woman. That's truly awful.

I remember something similar happened in the uk about 20 years ago when an escalator collapsed in the middle and a woman was caught in the machinery and killed. Tragic.

CherryBonBon · 31/07/2015 08:33

She ignored the warning sign that said not to use the escalator while it was being fixed.

I feel sorry for the child but am struggling to find sympathy for the mother. The child was almost killed too. Completely avoidable.

Why the hell did the staff not press the emergency stop button instead of watching her get all the way to the top?

FujimotosElixir · 31/07/2015 09:40

Should it not have been completely cordoned off? RIP poor woman.

BastardGoDarkly · 31/07/2015 22:56

I don't think they thought that part was going to collapse though did they?

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 15/08/2015 10:37

Usually when a piece of equipment is dangerous it is non accessible to people. As a previous poster made the point. Why was it not cordened off.

TobleroneBoo · 15/08/2015 10:42

It's awful but I think she was warned not to get on, as I believe that's her husband at the bottom who chose not to go on

This is all part of China's bad health and safety record. We may well mock the EU directives as full of red tape but we would never have something like this happen because we have it all in place. China, as I understand it, believe that they save time and get more done because they don't have these H&S directives to carry out. It may be true but it does result in death and injury in the workplace as well as on a public level.

Why in the name of fuck did the staff women not press the emergency stop button on the damn thing as soon as they realised it was unsafe? They were hovering around, they knew the plate was loose, they should have stopped that thing moving the instant they knew safety was compromised, not stand around dithering!! So it might not be their job, but that's not relevant - it's not safe, they obviously realise that, and yet they leave the thing running. Mad. And tragic. :( Poor woman, poor child watching his mother disappear :( :(
