Life means that even after release from jail (if that's possible for the crime) then the person is "on licence" for life and has their rights severely curtailed. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but that's what "life" means. The likes of Hindley get life meaning "life in jail". Other people serve a minium sentence in jail and then are realeased on licence for the rest of their life.

A life sentence can never be a "spent conviction" afaik. You don't have to "declare" spent convictions after 5 or 7 years on job applications and such.
