I'm pretty matter of fact when it comes to meat. In an ideal work I would prefer meat that was shot from the field but I buy my meat in a supermarket. I was horrified by this footage. How do we make abattoirs more humane? How do we know how are meat is killed?

You could start by signing the epetition that has been started to get a ban on non-stun slaughter.

I believe that the majority of Slaughter men in the UK are Muslim, as the majority of meat on sale is Halal. To quote from the Guardian - Why is there so much halal meat? 8 May 2014

"One possible answer is contained in the Daily Mail's article, when it quotes a spokesman from Compassion in World Farming:

With ever-larger abattoirs now exporting meat to wider and wider markets, it has become simpler and more cost effective for many of them to subject all their animals to halal slaughter."

This is worth signing to monitor abbatoir workers:

There is a petition here backed by the British Veterinary Association, welfare organisations etc, to end non-stun slaughter (which I've signed). Typically the Government has more or less said they won't do anything about it apart from wait to see if we get permission from the EU to put labels on the meat Hmm.

Over 80% of halal meat in the UK is stunned - much of it is the same as any other slaughter except with a tape of prayers playing in the background. Most of the unstunned meat in the UK goes into small specialist butchers. With care, slaughter can be as humane without stunning - whether it is or not in practice is the question.

I've toured a number of slaughterhouses - some without warning - and have been impressed by the standards of treatment of the animals. A tonne bull in post-death twitches is never going to look nice, but that's different from being in pain.
