I still remember it happening

Horrible, hideous. My father went to help dig the children out of the rubble. He told me later that they were digging with their bare hands. We were surrounded by just the same sort of tips, and I was terrified that it would happen in our valley.

The coal board took money from the charity fund to clear the tip

how terrible - I also remember this on the news, one of my earliest memories. There was a feature on the radio this morning about it and I was in tears for those poor children. It talked about the vile behaviour of the coal board too, what utter bastards.

Your poor father. He must be haunted by it.
