I know that's not supposed to be funny.

So why's it funny then?

sugarfree · 05/10/2006 15:44

I only managed to read the first line.
Escalators will eat you regardless of shoes!

ewwwww.

southeastastralplain · 05/10/2006 15:46

ouch

PandaG · 05/10/2006 15:51

does say not just crocs though doesn't it? Any soft shoe can be sucked in eurghhhh!

slightly related q to those of you who do wear and like crocs. Are crocs and socks a complete style no no? Love my crocs so much, but it is a bit chilly to be sockless now

marthamoo · 05/10/2006 15:51

Does anyone remember a public information film from the 70s about the dangers of escalators? It showed a child messing about and then a teddy at the bottom of the escalator..all mangled.

Terrified me for years - that and the one with the broken glass on the beach.

sugarfree · 05/10/2006 15:52

Yes Panda, and shoelaces and fingers and shopping bags dangling off buggies and ....

sugarfree · 05/10/2006 15:53

Martha! Stop...

southeastastralplain · 05/10/2006 15:57

that ad made me escalator phobic for years when i was little i used to scream as we reached the top.

hana · 05/10/2006 15:59

at our local shopping mall in Canada there were posters at the top and bottoms of the escalators with mangled shoes saying 'this could happen to you don't stand to close to edge' sort of thing. used to really spook me out

SamhainWitch · 05/10/2006 16:22

Yep marthamoo, I remember that film. I hate taking the kids on escalators and constantly find myself checking that their feet are inside the painted lines.

Callisto · 05/10/2006 16:34

I think a generation of people were scarred for life by that film. Escalators still give me the creeps - I always use the stairs if there is an option. Sadly I have a thing about lifts too.

DP doesn't do his shoelaces up and got them caught in the escalators once. It can happen to any type of shoe.

PandaG I am wearing red/green/yellow/blue and purple stripey socks with my yellow crocs today (boy I must look soooo good).

sugarfree · 05/10/2006 18:27

Oh God Xales!!!
I knew I shouldn't have looked in here again.

yoyo · 05/10/2006 18:36

Martha - me too! Still hate them and am paranoid when using the tube especially if the childen are with me. Wasn't there a case where someone fell and their hair got caught and they were scalped? That might be just one of the many nightmares I have had about them though.

JoolsTOOOOOOOoooooooooo · 05/10/2006 18:40

oh moo, that glass on the beach one - the film stopped just as the child was about to step on it

aren't those clog things plastic? eeeww!!

marthamoo · 05/10/2006 19:15

I vaguely remember that too, yoyo.

Oh that glass one was horrible - I don't think I knew as a child that the glass wasn't stepped on, Jools - I always covered my eyes with my fingers.

bobsmum · 05/10/2006 19:17

Then don't ever look here

Not for the sqeamish!

Gobbledispook · 05/10/2006 19:20

Moo - I was just going to post about that ad! I remember it! I thought it was a rag doll that got all mangled though. It was harrowing for me at that age - scared me silly! Illustrated by the fact that I can still bloody remember it!

bobsmum · 05/10/2006 19:22

couldn't find the escalator one - just the glass.

Gobbledispook · 05/10/2006 19:24

god I remember this one - again, not for the squeamish - arf!

ilovecaboose · 05/10/2006 19:33

We had an accident on the escalators at a department store I worked in (we had had several over the years actually).

Luckily it was early on a sunday and so there weren't many people. We heard a huge crash.

One of the escalators had collapsed. There was a couple on it. The guy managed to react quickly and pull his wife off (they were nearly at the bottom), luckily she only broke her hand (she had been holding on when he grabbed her). But it took her a long time to get over the shock.

SOmeone else passed out at the top of a busy escalator, knocked every one down into a big pile at the bottom. The person who fell was fine. Those at the bottom of the pile werenot.

Scary things. I don't let ds on them.

lucycat · 05/10/2006 19:40

'The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates about 10,000 people go to the emergency room every year after accidents on escalators. Of those, 20 percent involved having hands, feet or shoes trapped'

10,000!!! how do you get your hand trapped? pulling your crocs out I assume?

Nothing is as scary as 'The Spirit of Dark and Lonely water' the public info film with Donald Pleasance as the Grim Reaper - ye gods, stuff of nightmares even now.

lucycat · 05/10/2006 19:46

In fact it's soooo scary that I just had to do a link to it here

mwah ha ha ha haaaa

sugarfree · 05/10/2006 19:48

You lot are heckin' sadists the lot of you.
Thanks for the stats though, now I can justify to DH why it's better to climb 4 flights of stairs.
