Maybe a stupid question about interviewing terrorists

I've just seen a jihadist interviewed on sky news. Apparently not IS but affiliated with them.

Why has he not been arrested? How did sky find him when the authorities haven't? Why the Fuck are British media interviewing terrorists and giving them airtime?

Im not sure we are giving him airtime tbh, but I assume the reason why they haven't arrested him is because he hasn't been proved to have done anything, just used his right 'freedom of speech'.
MI5 probably know all about him but they may have to wait till he actually starts to do things.

Im not sure though. That could all be bollocks which I've just spouted.

I mean, WHY we are giving him airtime...

PetulaGordino · 09/10/2014 09:29

from a journalistic pov i would have thought that an interview with a jihadist using their own words is much more credible than (say) just reporting what government forces say jihadists are saying

SouthernComforts · 09/10/2014 09:30

I mean what planet are we living on where we have to watch a man casually spouting jihadist crap at us on breakfast news before they switch to the sports results.

*I realise I don't have to watch but it was on as soon as I put the channel on.

Plus I feel it is normalising the whole thing.

Surely any other criminal that openly admitted and tried to justify what they want to do to their victims on national news would be arrested?

It's not enough to admit what you're doing, or for other people to know what you're doing. There has to be enough evidence to prosecute. There are people in my local area who everyone knows are involved with illegal paramilitary organisations. But none of us would stand up in court and give evidence against them, because we want to live. And we don't fancy spending the rest of our lives in witness protection.
