Free school meals

Hi,

I'm not sure what to do about snacks for my son with the new free school meals. We have taken up the free meal - but I'm wondering whether to still give him snacks e.g. chocolate (maybe not allowed now?) or something more healthy e.g. cheese to still take to school as a snack. Does anyone else have views/ experience?

Our school only allow fruit and cereal bars as snacks. My DCs are still in YR1 so there is fruit available, but I take a snack (normally fruit) at pick up. I don't think giving them chocolate everyday would be good for them though

Hang on, if they are in the infants (therefore receiving the free lunches) surely they should already be getting the free fruit as well, for snack.

I would be VERY surprised indeed to find any primary school allowing chocolate or sweets as a snack! Ours it is fruit or veg only. Not even cereal bars.

Fruit and veg only here too. Key stage 1 get fruit and veg snack every day though and make a cake or biscuits every Wed for each other.

I'm worrying that my DC are eating 2 cooked meals a day, and DS (9) is overweight as it is, according to the NHS BMI calculator. Especially worried as the school meal seems to be high in carbs and sugar. I tried giving them just sandwiches when they got home but it didn't fill them up, they grazed continuously until bedtime. So this month I'm reducing their school dinners down to twice a week.
