Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere but I couldn't find the thread if it has. Just interested to know people's opinions on air strikes against Islamic State militants in Iraq.

My opinion is they need stopping, and quickly

I think Britain/states/rest of the world are very very scared of where this will take us

I can't find any other threads about this either.

I'm not sure if air strikes are the right thing but we need to be seen to be actively trying to combat these monsters. For too long now our government have sat back while they have peddled their violence and hate for fear of being called racist.

To a certain extent we've bought this upon ourselves.

Meddling in Iraq and toppling Hussain left Iraq weak. Ditto with Syria which left Syria weak too. As a result IS have been given the space to grow.

Plus arming the rebels & Iraqi army with modern weaponry probably seemed like a great idea at the time but now those weapons are in the hands of IS, it probably doesn't seem so great.

We should never have meddled in the affairs of another country. Nature abhors a vacuum and we've created the vacuum by messing around half heartedly.

Ultimately all this bombing is useless unless there are boots on the ground to destroy IS. The Iraqi army are useless, the Syrian army too weakened from fighting what is/was the rebels to take on IS.

So at some point I do fear that boots on the ground from the western nations like US/UK will be needed. Or otherwise we just end up being sucked into another quagmire where we're seen as bombing innocents from high above and hated by everyone.

I just saw this on FB which is explains very 'clearly' Grin why us meddling in a region we know little about is fraught with difficulties.
