Little boy has been removed from hospital by his parents

He is very sick, needs constant treatment. His parents have taken him to France.

I don't understand why the hospital didn't notice or alert the police for 6 hours.

The police won't comment on the parents being Jehovah's Witnesses.

It sounds wrong when the statement said he was removed without consent. The child is theirs, should be allowed to be in charge of him, but of course it is he that will lose his life if not cared for and that isn't in his best interests necessarily.

I hope he is found and can be cured.

Bloody hell should quickly qualify - that is not implying that it is your friend's fault - just that it may have spurred the family to do more of their own research and decide to strike their own course of action. At the end of the day the decision they made was the decision they made.

BUT - I had wondered why Ashya didn't seem to have bandages on his head when he was being wheeled out of the hospital and if the surgery was older then that would explain things..

mummylin2495 · 02/09/2014 13:14

It isn't recent troels , it was in 2003 and he was moved to a hospice , I have to say I have been thinking in the last few days if this proton therapy was around then if the outcome would of been different for him, as I'm sure our friends have.

"Sally Roberts is getting slated in the new AIBU thread."

I don't think I have the energy.

TroelsNextCampaignManager · 02/09/2014 13:31

Oh really sorry for misunderstanding mummylin - this must be awfully triggering for them Sad

Icimoi · 02/09/2014 13:31

Icimoi, you can charge your phone in a car. It doesn't take a genius to figure that one out.

Somehow I don't think feeding machines automatically come with the right connectors. Yes, these parents said they had them, but how were the hospital and police supposed to know that?

Icimoi · 02/09/2014 13:36

And is it possible to do it manually with a syringe, I don't know

Yes it is. Which is something the hospital would have been well aware of.

So how was the hospital to know whether they had syringes, feed, and all the right sterilisation equipment and the means to use it? Yes, they might have said to themselves that it was possible or even likely, but suppose they proved to be wrong and the child became seriously ill as a result? They'd have been slaughtered for keeping quiet.

The lawyer who was on good morning this am was saying that the wrong type of warrant was issued. It shouldn't have been an extradition one, instead the type where the kings were requested to present themselves to talk to the police. Then they could have explained that they had the right kit to care for Aysha, and this whole "imprisonment" rubbish, and armed guard malarky could have been done away with. Makes more sense to me, so I wonder why they felt the need to be so so heavy handed about it.

Hopefully today will see some real progress and the family can begin to make amends. Whether they'll get wardship back I am unsure of though?

edamsavestheday · 02/09/2014 13:46

ah, wrong type of warrant demanded by the police makes sense - would have been fair more suitable if the Kings had merely been asked to explain themselves to the police and assure them that they had everything they needed to care for Ashya, and plans to get him medical treatment.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 02/09/2014 13:46

Is it acceptable to have to prove that you can care for your child correctly (where no existing cp concerns exist). The hospital would have known they knew how to do it,it's standard to have the parents do this sort of thing very quickly and considered quite an issue if the parents don't/won't.

That is all they needed to know. Nobody else has to prove they know how to care for their own child.

Do we have a link about the cps dropping the extradition and an inquiry? As I can't find one

edamsavestheday · 02/09/2014 13:48

I do think it's positive that social media has made SUCH a difference in this case. A few years ago, this would all have been hushed up - the parents would have had no opportunity to explain themselves.

winnertakesitall · 02/09/2014 13:50

Needsasock... As far as I know it hasn't yet been dropped, the crown prosecution are still reviewing. The thing about the warrant was just a lawyers 'opinion'. I believe something is happening at 2.30pm.

Don't know if that is the outcome of the review?

TroelsNextCampaignManager · 02/09/2014 13:55

Winner the review is about Ashya being a ward of court.

The Council's call for the warrant to be quashed is reported here
"Donna Jones, the leader of Portsmouth City Council, the authority which began legal action after Ashya was removed from hospital without his doctors' consent, has urged the CPS to "remove any extradition proceedings, so the family can be reunited".

The reports about the internal investigation were on BBC News and as a breaking news headline (but no story to link to as yet) on BBC online.

TroelsNextCampaignManager · 02/09/2014 13:56

Sorry the 2:30 review that is.

GimmeMySquash · 02/09/2014 13:56

I think that may be the press conference the Brothers said they were planning, where they were going to release information not previously released.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 02/09/2014 13:58

Thank you winner, I had obviously misunderstood a post up thread

TroelsNextCampaignManager · 02/09/2014 13:59

Agree edam re SM. But it slightly contributed to the initial misreporting as the police force used twitter to exaggerate the risk (most likely as represented by SGH) and imply the parents were criminal when, in fact, lawyers seem to be saying that they did nothing illegal in removing Ashya from hospital.

TroelsNextCampaignManager · 02/09/2014 14:01

Kate Hoey asked Theresa May when the warrant was going to be dropped. May said it was under review right now.

edamsavestheday · 02/09/2014 14:07

Troels, the same misleading line would have been given to traditional media in the days before Facebook etc. I think social media has played a huge and positive part in this case.

GimmeMySquash · 02/09/2014 14:27

DC said he can't get involved, he wants him reunited with his parents on LBC. Chocolate tea pot.

Greengrow · 02/09/2014 14:51

The child is ward of course now and the parents who are holed up in a top security Spanish prison are supposed in theory to be able to instruct lawyers to put their points at another hearing which I think is today or else tomorrow afternoon. In theory the law in fair. In practice the authorities hold all the cards just about always.

But would they have been able to care for him if he had a sudden crisis while they were driving through Europe? And how was the hospital supposed to know that they had all the necessary equipment, enough food, the means to repair the equipment if necessary, the means to sterilise and maintain it?

This was on any count a vulnerable child. His parents suddenly took him out of hospital and disappeared, the hospital had no idea where they were taking him and what equipment, nutrition and medication they had. Was the hospital supposed to shrug its shoulders and ignore that?

WetAugust · 02/09/2014 15:12

JH must be rubbing his hands with glee. Sadly

Actually I would say that thus case has made it less likely that parents would tahe advice to flee abroad as they can now see that fleeing to another EU country is pointless.

What this case does appear to do is to back up the claims of JH that some families do experience very heavy-handed treatment from the State.

cupofsneeze · 02/09/2014 15:14

It certainly does make you wonder how many other families have been treated in the same way and unable to voice any complaints due to court orders.

WetAugust · 02/09/2014 15:15

Latest:

CPS are now seeling to withdraw the European Arrest Warrant.

They have informed the High Court

The Court in Spain will be releasing the parents

maccie · 02/09/2014 15:18
