What is the point in an open prison?? anyone??

like you said - what is the point?!

Eh, in Canada, for minor offenses, you can get a sentence to be served only on weekends. So you spend all your weekends in prison, and your weeks working etc. (You have to have a job to get this sort of sentence.)

I remember DH cracking up when I explained this to him, but really, it makes sense for minor offenses, why should someone's life be totally ruined because of something they did. (If you go to normal prison, you lose your job, and then how do you support yourself when you get out?)

All these escapees will be caught, and given much harsher punishment, and not allowed to stay in a more relaxed prison any more.
