Madeleine McCann investigation

I saw today that possible excavations are to start in the resort where MM went missing.

Does anyone think the progress The Met have made is astonishing given the length of time that has elapsed? I can't help but wonder what progress could have been made if they had been involved at the start.

I really hope that somehow they can find out what happened and give her family some sort of closure. I know the ins and outs of what happened and her parents leaving her have been discussed at length on MN but from a crime point of view I would be very interested to see if the Portugese police had done enough or not.

OP posts:

The first article by Pat Brown on the web page I linked is also worth a read. It is entitled "The moment Madeleine was taken" and is a breathtakingly absurd (and by extension, cruel) interpretation of one short sentence spoken by Gerry McCann.

If this is the kind of guff that some posters find 'enlightening' or imply is credible, I am speechless.

The link here again for anyone who is interested in what is being implied behind all the "wink, wink, PM me for details, MNHQ are paranoid" nonsense on this thread.

Pretty disgusting IMHO Sad

I am surprised to see this thread still here, because when I bowed out last night one person seemed intent on disrupting it. I am glad that others did not allow themselves to be goaded into areas that would cause it to be pulled, as I, for one, am much better informed now about sources of information on the case.
I find it astonishing that a person can read a ghost-written book by a person with a vested interest in the case, and give it more weight that the official published summary of the police investigation.

lyndie · 10/05/2014 07:43

Well I too am glad the thread is still here. I started it thinking that SY had been the ones to prompt the change in direction. I'm not sure I believe the all the links I have read but it has prompted me to think more broadly than before.

A wee girl went on her holidays and never came back, I think all we want is an end to speculation and justice for her.

Can I just add to any ghoul accusers that people have always been interested in crime? You only have to go into any bookshop to see the vast sections both real life and crime fiction to see there is a demand. I went to a lecture recently that touched on the amount of coverage newspapers used to have on court reporting (pre 1950's) and the Victorian perspectives too and there has always been an interest in Forensic Medicine. I don't like tattoos or rugby or heavy metal but if you like them, go ahead, I like mysteries, crime and am interested in the police and forensics.

That is certainly an interesting interpretation MrsLiz

And 'vested interest in the case' is a novel way to describe a mother's investment in the story of her toddler's disappearance.

(Why are you trying to claim KM's memoir was ghost written BTW?)

Your snideness rather betrays your real intention.

noddyholder · 10/05/2014 07:54

The Kate McCann book bears no resemblance to Terry's blog contradicts all over the place.

Fideline987654321 · 10/05/2014 07:54

OP I don't think it is general interest in crime or even general iterest in this case which prompted the accusation of ghoulishness.

It is human nature to be curious about unsolved mysteries and human compassion to care about the fate of a little girl.

Some posts on this thread have an unpleasant undercurrent though.

Some of the things being implied are potentially libellous. Some of the 'PM me for the secret info' stuff is distasteful. What does come across as ghoulish though, is that certain posters seem to be enjoying it all a bit a lot too much. (not pointing the finger at you OP)

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 10/05/2014 08:04

YY Fideline - Totally agree with all your posts.

PacificDogwood · 10/05/2014 08:12

I have no idea what happened, and my only emotion about the case is that I feel terribly sorry for the child who is the victim here.

Hear, hear, janey - I feel that this is all there is to say about it until such time that a resolution is reached.

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 10/05/2014 08:14

I don't understand anyone's need or entitlement to get all hot and bothered over other's positions on this case.
No one here knows what happened and there is very much a little girl victim you're all frothing at the mouth over.

The smug, argumentative, inappropriately over-emotional stances here of "I'm a better person because I believe this and you don't" reads as rather pathetic tbh. That's for both sides.

HTH.

Dolly80 · 10/05/2014 08:16

I haven't read every post but am glad this thread is still here. I have close ties to the area in Portugal where this happened.

Every May since MM disappeared the village of Luz has been descended on by UK reporters. Their behaviour whilst there has been less than exemplary, including putting forward 'suspects' in the press who have in no way been implicated by the UK or Portuguese Police. They have consistently shown little respect for the village and it's occupants, who are of multiple nationalities including Portuguese and British.

To me it seems the media have a fascination with the case which has not been replicated in any other case of a missing UK child. They fuel the fire for various conspiracy theories, or evaluations of how terrible foreign police are compared to the British, and then, I imagine, sit back and watch the bunfights they cause.

I honestly think the case will remain unsolved. I hope I am wrong.

Fideline987654321 · 10/05/2014 08:31

I honestly think the case will remain unsolved. I hope I am wrong.

Well it won't be solved by a bunch of nose-tapping, teeth-sucking British Cyber-Tricoteuse by means of paranoid internet research, that's for sure.

Fideline987654321 · 10/05/2014 08:32

Likewise Sabrina Smile

EffectiveCommunication · 10/05/2014 08:36

None of us know anything for sure but can I ask those who believe the mccanns version of events how would you feel if the Portuguese version was proved right in court? Genuine question btw

Very sad for three children Sad

noddyholder · 10/05/2014 08:38

Paranoid internet research reading a book and coming to a conclusion for yourself? That is generally how humans work! I think it will be solved now as the investigation has definitely gone up a gear this year and it seems both forces even if they have different opinions are very much on it. A missing child is very emotive but I think that's because this is a site with lots if parents of young children. My ds is 20 and so I feel similar about the Pistorius case it resonates more with me but I do think people are entities to have whatever opinion they like not just the one that I have.

Fideline987654321 · 10/05/2014 08:44

I can't help musing that in a few years time the twins could well be googling. If they do they will find a lot of speculative stuff about their sister and parents.

Would any of us like our DC to be in the position of reading such stuff about their family? Should MN really be one of the places they find it?

Dolly80 · 10/05/2014 08:49

No it probably won't be solved that way Fideline...hence my steering clear of theories!

PennyTheProcrastinator · 10/05/2014 08:52

Fideline I think in their position I would be more perturbed to find out the conclusion of the official police investigation rather than threads on a discussion forum. Should the PJ take the files off the internet in case they read them in a few years? Another ridiculous excuse to try to stifle discussion.

noddyholder · 10/05/2014 08:53

I think Kate's book is not suitable for children either.

LaVolcan · 10/05/2014 08:55

It is the twins that I feel sorry for. Wholly innocent, but just getting to the age where other children will start asking questions/teasing them - with possibly some of the wildest speculation imaginable. You know how cruel children can be.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 10/05/2014 08:55

When police reports are published people will read them. That's why they get published.

When people write and publish books others will read them.

That is the entire point

Fideline987654321 · 10/05/2014 08:57

Police files are police files.

What good does all the theorisng do?

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 10/05/2014 08:58

The fact that the twins could google in the future is no different to any other case that makes the papers. I know someone who could grow up and read interesting opinions on her father - found innocent of sexual assault, but the comments beneath the mail article are still there.

noddyholder · 10/05/2014 08:59

Doesn't do any good but has been going on since the dawn of time and this won't be tape last case to be discussed.

noddyholder · 10/05/2014 08:59

Tape? Should be the

NeedsAsockamnesty · 10/05/2014 09:00

Who is doing that?

The only people speculating and doing so are the ones intentionally trying to get the thread pulled. Everybody else is just talking about the investigation and reports.
