I'm surprised he got an appropriate sentence that reflects the gravity of his crimes, but pleased.

member · 02/05/2014 14:37

Judge took Clifford's mimicing of reporter broadcast after guilty verdicts as indication of contempt of court process & that starting point for such offences being commited today as 10 years custody

member · 02/05/2014 14:40

I think that more victims have come forward since Clifford was initially charged so not sure if there could be further prosecution brought?

MamaMary · 02/05/2014 14:47

Eight years in jail..

EIGHT YEARS. Good.

BorisJohnsonsHairdresser · 02/05/2014 15:15

I am quite surprised he got so long. Out in four I guess?

BorisJohnsonsHairdresser · 02/05/2014 15:23

It makes you wonder what Jimmy Savile would have got, had he stood trial when alive.

edamsavestheday · 02/05/2014 16:07

that's interesting member, did the judge say in court s/he had taken Clifford's antics into account?

MamaMary · 02/05/2014 16:34

Yes, out in four. Can't believe some mumsnetters are calling it 'harsh'.

BorisJohnsonsHairdresser · 02/05/2014 16:58

I don't think it is harsh. I think having looked at the "IT's a knockout" Stuart Hall's sentence, I was expecting something little like that too. So it was a surprise to me that Max got as long as he did as a sentence.

member · 02/05/2014 17:12

Edam there is a reference to it in the judgement here & Mark Williams-Thomas tweeted about it this morning when the judge was hearing mitigating/aggrevating factors.

MamaMary · 02/05/2014 17:17

This link will tell you everything you need to know. The judge's report.

It is clear that this was sustained, pre-meditated sexual abuse carried out in a cynical, callous and deceitful manner.

Ugh, what a horrible excuse for a man.

hackmum · 02/05/2014 17:37

Well, it's about time.

LividofLondon · 02/05/2014 17:50

Just read that link MamaMary. What a vile man he is. Angry

I wonder how many other men are abusing women who hope to make something of themselves in show biz or modelling. How prevalent is the "casting couch" I wonder Sad

I would get rid of that post, MamaMary, liable and all that. I have my opinions on others who have been accused of similar, that don't leave my lips. Wink

ohmymimi · 02/05/2014 18:38

I'm glad that at least some of the prosecutions of these historical cases are being successful. Although some have got away with it (being found 'Not Guilty' is not a finding of innocent).

A good, well-deserved sentence in this case, but a pity he couldn't be sentenced under today's rules - life in his case could really well have meant that.

SauceForTheGander · 02/05/2014 18:47

He's a piece of shit isn't he.

The judge opted to give him a consecutive sentence rather than concurrent. Apparently more victims are coming forward so he could see his sentence increased.

To all those women who had to live through this trial and ordeal - I'm so happy you got your day in court and got to see this nasty arrogant sociopathic sex offender sent down.

MamaMary · 02/05/2014 19:02

It's not libel to say you think someone is guilty, it's an opinion. And actually I got the name wrong...

hackmum · 02/05/2014 19:03

It's still potentially libellous, MamaMary.

MamaMary · 02/05/2014 19:06

OK, have reported.

BorisJohnsonsHairdresser · 02/05/2014 19:08

I thought you did that to the name to get away with liable Wink.

nennypops · 02/05/2014 21:21

It does appear that the sentence is very likely to be reduced on appeal, for the reasons set out in the article that member linked to. I heard a criminal law barrister on the radio saying much the same thing. So it may well be that they will proceed with the other charges.

nauticant · 02/05/2014 21:56

This is an interesting and non-judgemental summary of the whole thing:

www.theguardian.com/media/2014/may/02/max-clifford-sex-politics-tabloids-simon-hattenstone?commentpage=1

It didn't lead me by the nose and leaves me with much to think about. (Although my personal view is good riddance you creepy and abusive cunt.)

BorisJohnsonsHairdresser · 03/05/2014 00:00

I do like the way the Guardian piece is written.

It doesn't matter what I think, he has been convicted and is going to do time, his victims I hope can have some peace now.

nennypops · 03/05/2014 10:26

It seems fairly extraordinary that his book didn't receive more adverse publicity. He refers quite blatantly to inducing girls to take part in sex parties on the false promise that it would help them get into show business, including pretending that his mates were influential in show biz when they weren't. No matter what you could say about the girls concerned, that seems far too close to an admission of pimping at best, colluding in rape at worst.
