I can't link to the Sky news interview with Nigel Farage but it was terrible

It was Kay Burley. About 3pm today. She made his case for him just now and I don't even think she meant it. In fact I think she's sure she made a good job of portraying him as a mad racist while talking to him about UKIP's poster suggesting migrant workers were stealing British jobs.

He seemed quite reasonable in the face of Burley. He didn't emerge as racist - protectionist at best - xenophobic at worst. He didn't even grab anyone round the throat or ask them if they'd have given it up a bit more their husband wouldn't have been tempted to murder prostitutes.

Then she went on about a pretty young woman they're featuring as a candidate who is from her appearance, clearly of Anglo-Asian background and demanding why UKIP didn't declare her background. Burley was the one who mentioned pretty. Not me or Farage.

Farage asked why they should and to be fair I had to agree. And also, she's a pretty woman who's used a flattering picture on her literature. Wouldn't you? If you want to know more about her views then read her literature and ask her questions, rather than the party.

Oh criminy. I had to admit that Nigel seemed reasonable. They're heading for a major result in the European elections. In my mad moments I toy with voting UKIP just because I've always lived in Tory constituencies and want to crush them now more than ever.

It could happen here. I won't do it, but the temptation is fucking strong.

I'd think it was a right-wing plot if I didn't know Burley of old and realise it was incompetence.

' BBC vans outside as they have been out and about all day in Bath in true witchfinder general mode in the search of racism. Unbelieveably they managed to find and interview of Bath's 3 Labour voters'

Are they BBC employees?

'we learnt from Nigel that Patrick Mercer had thrown in the towel'

Did Nigel give any indication that he may be considering standing himself?

Was it packed out? Was there a sense of victory in the air? I wish I had been there!

moondog · 29/04/2014 21:49

Very interesting WA!
Let's be having those pictures!

I am not sure he will really stand, but if he does and if he wins it, then it really will be curtains for the spinners. They would have nowhere left to hide. Farage would become a national hero in the House of Spinners.

Anything would then become possible. Mercer would only be the first one to throw in the towel.

claig · 29/04/2014 22:03

The video caption in the Telegraph article says

"Tory MP Mercer resignation.
'Cameron's Worst Nightmare' "

Not even the best political thriller writer could come up with this. Talk about drama, it's almost karma.

moondog · 29/04/2014 22:09

Mercer eh?
Who was it that was telling us how evil Nigel et al were?
Unlike snowy Mr Mercer.
Obviously.

Oink oink

Don't know how this works, but anything now seems possible

"Nevertheless Mr Wheeler, a millionaire who made his fortunes from a spread betting company, suggested that the party might be left with 10 to 12 MPs next year.

Asked on what spread of MPs he would bet on next year, he said: "It is so open. We might get no seats – that is a possibility without a doubt.

"It is quite likely we would get several seats and there is just a possibility that like [the Reform Party in] Canada 25 years ago we might come from almost nowhere [and win] the next election.

"The chances of actually winning the election are very remote but we might do far better than expected so I think I would have to push it up to 10 to 12 [seats]."

We might even see some jumping ship and boarding the bus.

As I was driving into Bath I heard that Mercer had been suspended but didn't know he had resigned until Nigel told us at the meeting. Quite a collective sharp intake of breath.

He said that he would announce whether he intended to stand in the morning as he needed to consider the decision on his drive from Bath to Swansea tomorrow. He also said that he could forsee a victory in Newark based on the momentum gained by UKIP in the EU elections. He thought that winning one by election would give UKIP the same sort of political breakthrough that the Reform party achieved in Canada, when it went from successfully winning a rural by election to becoming the country's largest party at the following general election.

If you could tell me how to operate my iphone I would post my piccies.

"He said that he would announce whether he intended to stand in the morning as he needed to consider the decision on his drive from Bath to Swansea tomorrow."

Blimey. Last time he thought about something overnight it was when he decided to take on Cleggy, and went on to trounce him when Cleggy "made the case" for Europe for the "party of in".

claig · 29/04/2014 22:28

Yes, UKIP is on a roll. Absolutely anything is now possible. If UKIP win in Newark, an earthquake won't describe it accurately. This is history in the making and the spinners' knees are shaking.

claig · 29/04/2014 22:33

It's on Newsnight now. The revolution continues and is being televised.

WetAugust · 29/04/2014 22:56

Funny - you mentioned the Canadian Reform party as I was writing my post about what was said about them. Smile

20 MEP seats were mentioned tonight. He said he thought UKIP's moment had come.

I'm not so sure. There was a very broad cross section there - all ages and the 'half-colonels' mixing with the dreadlocked. Very strange. Some were very enthusiastic and some had obvioulsy come to see what it was all about without committment. It reminded a lot of the Referendum Party make up back in 1997.

Personally, having been anti-EU /EEC/ Common Market etc and having seen the relentless stranglehold all things Brussels-derived have on us now I think that Farage realises this is a llast ditch all-out attempt to get the UK public to finally wake up about Europe.

It's a shame it's taken a debate over uncontrolled immigration to actually fire up the public interest that should have been present when our sovereignity was being eroded via Maastricht, Amsterdam, Lisbon etc - he said as much himself this evening.

But he did say that UKIP could invole Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty and expand on it to achieve a UK exit. So it is still technically possible to leave the EU.

He also said that we - the UK- constitutes 40% of the EU export market, so the idea that they would not trade with us following an EU exit is risible. He said the German car manufactuers alone would put sufficient pressure on their Govt to obtain trade agreements with the UK.

An interesting meeting, but he was preaching to someone who was converted long before the advent of UKIP.

claig · 29/04/2014 22:56

"Mr Farage sold out the public meeting which attracted around 40 protesters as well as hundreds of UKip supporters to Bath.

He told the cheering crowd inside The Forum: "We want our money back, we want our borders back, we want our country back."

I think he is really going to win. Amazing. Video from the event in Bath from the Bath Chronicle in the article below.

Pixel · 29/04/2014 22:57

if he's not allowed an In/Out vote then all that will happen is the Tories will ditch Cameron and replace him with a Leader who will do the deed with Cleggy.

That's exactly what I said to dh this morning. They really must think we are so stupid.

claig · 29/04/2014 23:03

"They really must think we are so stupid."

Exactly. But the public will have the last laugh.

WetAugust · 29/04/2014 23:06

Thanks for the link Claig. They are a lot better than my photos, although I did get a good shot of Farage is a Banker. Didn't notice the Hamiltons there. If I ever get my mail working from my iphone I'll post my pictures.

Pixel - it's so obvious isn't it? It's really quite depressing that they think they can fool us again and again.
