this is taking things way too far, they might as well ban the lot, as I see it you have them beating each other up but PC idiots were offended by the smoking scenes!!!! what fuckwits. I grew up watching t&j and yes i smoked but I certainly wasn't influenced by a cartoon, ooh this kind of thing gets my back up why can't they leave alone

It amazes me how much these idiots think people are influenced by things. Are they measuring us against themselves?
I've never smoked - my parents do and that's enough for me - but even so, I wouldn't have been influenced by a fricking cartoon!!
I mean - do they think kids believe they can fly because of superman? Who ever ate spinach because Popeye did?
If they had their way, cartoons would only consist of kids sitting down and doing maths or something (can't show kids running around. They might fall and hurt themselves and sue someone).

FFS - down with the thought police! Who's up for a rebellion????

How ridiculous.

trinityrhino · 22/08/2006 14:00

pathetic, I think tom and jerry is great for kids

SofiaAmes · 22/08/2006 21:36

Pathetic. Why don't they just ban smoking in bars, restaurants and public places. There is a huge amount of evidence that it greatly reduces rates of smoking. Everyone is doing it across europe. The these idiots are wasting their time with tom and jerry. Not to mention are they that out of touch that they think that the young kids who smoke are watching tom and jerry....puhlease....my two stepkids who are 12 and 13 and who smoke have their cigarettes bought by their mother and havent' watched tom and jerry since they were two. They were watching adult shows right alongside their mother since they were toddlers.

nicnack2 · 22/08/2006 21:41

i think that the less kids see the more inquisitive they become about things. ie smoking/drinking

Rookiemum · 23/08/2006 09:19

Its so stupid as well because if you are going to apply todays standards to yesterdays cartoons/films/whatever then they would also get rid of the racist stereotyping in T&J (any scenes with the housekeeper in them), which to my mind is a lot more offensive than a few shots of a cat smoking.

Oh and I live in Scotland and it is WONDERFUL now the smoking ban is in place. Hopefully by the time our kids grow up smoking will be such a marginalized activity that they won't even bother.

prettybird · 23/08/2006 09:29

Years ago someone threatened to try to ban Tom & Jerry because fo the "violence" in them!

He was apparentyl only stopped when his young son threatened to campaign to stop Match of the day!

I am passionately anti-smoking and also live in Scotland, where the smoking ban is fantastic. However, I think this sort of revionism is wrong and smacks of "1984" and re-writing history.

As Iklboo says - children do know that cartoon are fantasy. And picking up on her Popeye analogy - are they going to take away his pipe? That os an integral part of his character.

expatinscotland · 23/08/2006 09:45

I never watched Tom & Jerry. Even when I was a kid.

They're lame.

SofiaAmes · 23/08/2006 17:12

I wasn't allowed to watch t&j as a child because it was too violent. I wasn't allowed to watch the three stooges either.
I'm in Los Angeles, by the way, where we have had a smoking ban for 8 years or so. It was one of the first cities in the world to do so and it's just absolutely wonderful.

Alibaldi · 23/08/2006 17:14

And the man who tried to ban T&J years ago was the MP for Rugby, Warwickshire where I was living as a child - boy was I annoyed with him. Don't you realise we're not allowed to think for ourselves any more

prettybird · 23/08/2006 17:28

I still get upset at the violence in Tom & Jerry!

But I recognise that that is my problem and don't go about trying to get it banned!
