Have you seen the pilot's YouTube videos? Lots of DIY tips and hints about optimising air con units etc. he came across as a nice guy if a little geeky. It doesn't fit with the idea of him as a mass murder. Cabin depressurisation seems the most plausible theory to me.

LoopyDoopyDoo · 22/03/2014 10:03

Do you have a link for that Michonnes?

livingzuid · 22/03/2014 10:04

BBC:

The Chinese government is reporting the discovery of a large object in the South China Sea, Malaysian Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein announces at a press briefing in Kuala Lumpur.

livingzuid · 22/03/2014 10:05

And yes feel very sorry for the Malaysian govt. They have not handled things perfectly by any means but this is impossible for them.

MichonnesSamuraiSword · 22/03/2014 10:05

To be honest, I don't think anyone can speculate on what sort of person commits suicide, or what type of pilot would do this.

When someone is suicidal, I would assume rational thought might not be at the forefront of their minds.

Cuckoocloud · 22/03/2014 10:06

From the DM I know, but has anybody read the story of a Malaysian women who claims to have seen a metal, plane-shaped object in the ocean, near the Andaman Islands on the day it disappeared? She was flying from Jeddah to Kuala Lumpur. She claims that she told her children about it when she arrived at her destination and was only then told that the plane had disappeared. She lodged a police report. It was scorned at the time - but could it have any credibility?

livingzuid · 22/03/2014 10:07

Christ what a roller coaster for families. They just don't know which way to turn.

MichonnesSamuraiSword · 22/03/2014 10:07

Don't have a link - just seen it live on Sky news now.

News websites have v little detail other than what was announced.

God they've just said there's a Cyclone heading down into the southern ocean now, so it will make searching even more difficult

Nottheshrinkingcapgrandpa · 22/03/2014 10:08

Where did they find it, mms?

MichonnesSamuraiSword · 22/03/2014 10:09

This is all Sky News have on it:

The Chinese government has said it has located a large object in the sea after viewing satellite imagery.

During a news conference in Kualu Lumpur on Saturday, Malaysian Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein was handed a piece of paper containing the apparent discovery.

The object is thought to be 72ft long (22m) and 98ft wide (30m) and was spotted somewhere in the southern search corridor in the Indian Ocean.

Reporter just saying that it's 6 pm there now, so light is fading. He also said that when one of the Chinese search planes flew into Perth, they tried to land at the wrong airport as they'd had misinformation on where to land. More complications and obstacles and delays.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 22/03/2014 10:10

I'd say there are three main "reasons" why someone would commit suicide

1 - there is no way out of this situation but to die. Ie severe debt, or has done something wrong

2 - i am a bad person, the world is better off without me

3 - (the one that is relevant) the world is bad. By killing others, i am helping them

MichonnesSamuraiSword · 22/03/2014 10:11

Cuckoo yes I read about that lady - but based on the pings I think they've discounted the idea that the plane went down that close to the Andaman islands.

Surely if a plane was visible in the sea, other people would also have spotted it??

MichonnesSamuraiSword · 22/03/2014 10:12

They're replaying the Minister's announcement now - he said the Bejing govt will announce more in a couple of hours.

IsabellaRockerfeller · 22/03/2014 10:13

From Sky news: The object is thought to be 72ft long (22m) and 98ft wide (30m) and was spotted somewhere in the southern search corridor in the Indian Ocean.

The search operation of the ocean south west of Perth in western Australia involving six aircraft on Saturday failed to locate any sign of debris spotted by a satellite last week.

But bad weather could affect the operation after a cyclone warning was declared for Tropical Cyclone Gillian, which is forecast to move into the southern search corridor

IsabellaRockerfeller · 22/03/2014 10:13

Sorry X post with michon !

MichonnesSamuraiSword · 22/03/2014 10:14

Expert on Sky News now saying that a rectangle 22m x 30m is beyond dimensions of the aircraft (as a rectangular shape), but could be length of aircraft vs wing tips.

He also said that if sections this large are indeed there, it would indicate low impact crash, as large parts of aircraft still intact.

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 22/03/2014 10:16

Fingers crossed the searchers all stay safe.

Cuckoocloud · 22/03/2014 10:18

Ah, the pings! Thanks Michonnes. I didn't sound like anybody was taking it seriously! Interesting developments about finding a new large object on Sky news now........

MichonnesSamuraiSword · 22/03/2014 10:19

OK stupid question here that's probably been asked before:

If the object they've located is part of the plane, floating on surface, and therefore if the black box remains above the surface - wouldn't it be emitting a GPS ping?

DoctorTwo · 22/03/2014 10:19

BBC link. China have apparently found something 30mx22m in size. That's huge.

MichonnesSamuraiSword · 22/03/2014 10:21

They've just said site of debris is 120km to West of where the Australians are currently searching.

Could therefore be related to the debris previously spotted by the satellite

Chinese TV suggesting object is 13m x 22m rather than 30m - suggesting message lost in translation.

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 22/03/2014 10:23

Just because some part of the plane is floating, doesn't mean the black box is, Mich.

MichonnesSamuraiSword · 22/03/2014 10:25

Yeah, I thought that as I was writing it... just wishful thinking I guess

MichonnesSamuraiSword · 22/03/2014 10:26

I wonder if this incident will lead to some radical overhaul of technology, both in plane tracking / locating devices, and also in governments sharing radar data more quickly.

I just never imagined before this that a plane could just disappear. I thought they were tracked the whole way.
