Hope this is it, for those poor families.

MichonnesSamuraiSword · 22/03/2014 10:33

I really hope that they did die of depressurization and hypoxia, and were therefore unaware and died peacefully.

I can't bear to think of any other scenario, it's the stuff of nightmares.

I don't suppose we'll ever really know about that though, or can the black box, if found, tell us the status of the cabin pressure?

NewLisaLife · 22/03/2014 10:33

I wider if today's the day well hear news of a 'site' or an intact plane.

MichonnesSamuraiSword · 22/03/2014 10:34

Not sure if we will know today New as it's already evening in the search area, they may have to call off the search.

And a cyclone warning has been issued.

God this must be excruciating for the families

MichonnesSamuraiSword · 22/03/2014 10:35

They have now confirmed that the object is 13m x 22m, not 30m as originally stated.

I wonder if ships in the area can still search at night or do they need to move into calmer waters?

MichonnesSamuraiSword · 22/03/2014 10:37

Chinese media reporting that these latest images taken on Tuesday, a day after the Australian (actually it was the US?) images were taken.

Why on earth did we not know until now then?

PsammeadPaintedTheLion · 22/03/2014 10:37

I think I have said this before, but once more, I wouldn't read too much into the dates onnthe satellite images. The area they had to search was huge so it really really is not in the least bit suspicious that it took 4 days to spot anything from the pictures. I do not think they sat on the information for 4 days, but rather, it took 4 days to find anything.

member · 22/03/2014 10:38

Anybody good with co-ordinates? How far is that image from where the search has been concentrated till now?

MichonnesSamuraiSword · 22/03/2014 10:43

Ah thanks Psammead so the images were taken on Tues, but they may not have analyzed them till now. That makes sense.

Member one of the Sky news reporters did say how far the image was from the previous search area, I posted it above, will scroll back now to find it again.

MichonnesSamuraiSword · 22/03/2014 10:45

They've just said site of debris is 120km to West of where the Australians are currently searching.

Not sure how accurate this was, it was one of the Sky News reporters stating that in the immediate aftermath of the press conference.

livingzuid · 22/03/2014 10:46

I don't think anyone is saying suicide is smearing the pilot, certainly not in our culture. And it should not be ruled out. But in someone else's it is as good as saying they've gone to hell. It must be excruciating for those families to see all of this played out in the press and the names of their loved ones being dissected over and over again. Can't the press just leave it as 'suicide is one option' and leave it at that? No, because it makes a good story at the expense of people who are trying to come to terms with it all. Makes me a bit cross Blush

MichonnesSamuraiSword · 22/03/2014 10:46

That image certainly looks more convincing than anything we've seen so far.

MichonnesSamuraiSword · 22/03/2014 10:47

Cyclone is currently to the west of Java, tracking SW- expected to reach search area by Monday-Tuesday.

member · 22/03/2014 10:48

Thanks, I missed you saying that originally. Pretty close in terms of how tides can move objects then, especially if these images were taken a couple of days after the images taken on 16th March.

PsammeadPaintedTheLion · 22/03/2014 10:49

Michonnes, yes, if you wanted to find something that had fallen into the sea a week ago, you'd look at images from a week ago in the place you thought it had most likely fallen. Given the search area, it would take you a loooong time before you found anything. A bit like if you shredded a dictionary, scattered it over your living room floor, and then tried to find one particular word.

After you found it you'd try to figure out where it had floated off to and then try looking there, physically, or with more satellite images.

MichonnesSamuraiSword · 22/03/2014 10:50

Expert on Sky saying debris could be shipping debris that has fallen into the ocean, the size is within range - but if they're part of the aircraft, would indicate low impact crash, not broken up into small parts.

member · 22/03/2014 10:50

Agree re the image Mich looks more triangularish (non technical!) than rectangular.

member · 22/03/2014 10:59

I'm trying to post the image rather than the link - never done the photo thing before...

Anybody else having to spend less time at the weekend looking at this stuff in case their family think they are abnormally obsessed Blush?

MichonnesSamuraiSword · 22/03/2014 11:10

Nah I just don't tell my family what I'm reading about Wink

livingzuid · 22/03/2014 11:12

member yes Grin

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 22/03/2014 11:40

member definitely! My DH said to me the other day in rather a sardonic tone, "So have you managed to find the plane yet?" Hmm

GarlicMarchHare · 22/03/2014 12:00

Occam's Razor? You think "The Pentagon did it" is the simplest explanation?

This did make me chuckle, Doctrine, but I agree with HoneyBadger. Previously suicidal pilots have had motives that were fairly evident on examination - huge debts being an obvious one, leaving out religious/political causes. Nothing known about these two suggests such an overwhelming motive. Depressed people kill themselves, not hundreds of others as well.

Occam's Razor prefers the explanation that fits the known facts with the fewest assumptions, no matter how unlikely it seems. "The pilots carried out a complex & carefully planned, homicidal suicide" looks like a bigger assumption than hijacking by a government to me.

The Razor is only a heuristic tool, though. And I doubt we'll ever get enough honest information to conclude.
