Not the most likely. If the plane was on fire it couldn't stay up. And why didn't he just land the thing somewhere? Why would the pings still be kept being sent?

See the BBC's good theories page for good explanations as to the viability of each one. The pilot's one was not thought likely.

www.bbc.com/news/magazine-26609687

It was discussed at length on the last thread as well which is why some people may not comment on it again :)

Quinteszilla · 19/03/2014 12:56

The article said the reason they continued on could be because the crew was unconscious, so the plane flew on until it was out of petrol, at which point I assume it would nosedive?

livingzuid · 19/03/2014 12:57

rusty disgusting isn't it how some people seem to revel in this kind of thing.

fabbakergirl I didn't realise that about the relatives not allowed to approach media but I think we did mention it way back when now I think of it. Surely that can't be applicable to all relatives and it was just the Chinese government being its usual charming self? I imagine people from Oz etc would not have any patience with that.

livingzuid · 19/03/2014 12:58

'But Goodfellow's theory has been disputed. If the course was changed during a major emergency, one might expect it to be done using manual control. But the left turn was the result of someone in the cockpit typing "seven or eight keystrokes into a computer on a knee-high pedestal between the captain and the first officer, according to officials", the New York Times reported. The paper says this "has reinforced the belief of investigators - first voiced by Malaysian officials - that the plane was deliberately diverted and that foul play was involved."'

So no, it didn't just go in a straight line from all appearances. Granted, on the very little we know.

Titsalinabumsquash · 19/03/2014 13:00

Apologies, I hadn't seen it in the previous threads. I am one of these that likes to hope everyone is innocent until the end! Blush

livingzuid · 19/03/2014 13:01

There are thousands of messages on this subject, hard to read through all of that :)

AGnu · 19/03/2014 13:02

Could whoever starts the next thread include a brief summary of the big things discussed already so newcomers can catch up? It's a lot of information for people just joining in to look back through!

Dinosaursareextinct · 19/03/2014 13:04

Maybe the pilot programmed the change of direction (to nearest airport) so that he would have his hands free to fight the fire.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 19/03/2014 13:10

Was just about to suggest that Agnu :)

Any thoughts for what should go in it?

JonathanGirl · 19/03/2014 13:12

So how the satellite thing works is that the satellite sends out a request to the plane and the plane responds. The amount of time that passes between the request and the response can be used to calculate how far away from the satellite the plane is so all you know is that the plane is somewhere on a circle which is X distance from the satellite.

Ah, now I understand! It measures how long it takes to respond. Thank you, Queen Stromba. It seems so simple now.

SinisterSal · 19/03/2014 13:16

How long does it take to turn an aircraft?

How immediate would the diversion be?

Is it feasible for the pilots to say Goodnight to Malaysian airspace, all ok at this point, then notice the smoke and decide to divert, reprogramme the flight to turn to the nearest safest airport. Would the plane have the range to make that turn before entering Vietnamese space/ making an unsheduled and unnoticed maneovre in Vietnamese airspace.
And at what point in he above were the comms switched off? Before the pilots said Goodnight Malaysia?

Sorry if I am being a dafty

JuanPotatoTwo · 19/03/2014 13:16

Oh my god, just seen the bbc news. That poor poor woman. How could they manhandle her like that? Her distress is just heartbreaking to see. Those poor relatives, please let them get some answers.

livingzuid · 19/03/2014 13:17

Comes were turned off before the last message was received by air traffic control by the Co pilot.

livingzuid · 19/03/2014 13:17

The transponders that is were turned off prior to the last message.

livingzuid · 19/03/2014 13:18

It's horrendous isn't it :(

JuanPotatoTwo · 19/03/2014 13:22

Just heart wrenching. Can't begin to imagine how they feel. Well, maybe I can begin to imagine, having dc of my own, but even so.

SinisterSal · 19/03/2014 13:23

Would the pilots know that the transponder was inoperational for whatever reason? If it was damaged by fire under the bonnet so to speak, surely they would have an indication of that, and would hardly say All Ok Goodnight.

Again sorry if these q's have been covered. It's hard to keep up

ferrar · 19/03/2014 13:24

Am confused. If it did go over the maldives and possibly land at Diego Garcia...
It could be intact?
And the US would know?
Apologies if this has already been answered, couldnt see that it had.

Dashingpebble · 19/03/2014 13:36

Not sure if this has been discussed on previous threads. There were two Ukrainians and one Russian on the plane. The Malaysian investigators have not yet received any background check on these passengers yet.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-26644085

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 19/03/2014 13:37

I think it was felt likely that the plane would have been detected if it had landed there ferrar.

Dinosaursareextinct · 19/03/2014 13:40

The pilot who's suggested the fire in cockpit idea said that the pilots would not know if the transponder had failed (due to as yet undetected fire).

SinisterSal · 19/03/2014 13:46

Thanks Dinosaurs must have missed that too. I had assumed there would be a light on the dashboard - type thing when something failed. Am confusing Jumbo Jets with my humble little Golf Blush

Now for my next question, What about those mobile phones, eh?

HairyPorter · 19/03/2014 13:48

My latest tinfoil hat theory is that the Russians planned it. And they'll frame the US/whoever else Russia intends to go to war with and produce evidence to support that soon. This is to get China on their side when the US start getting tough with Russia. There is this bizarre report that apparently was issued by the kremlin a few days ago accusing the US of hijacking the plane.... I think Russia will start producing evidence to support that soon.... I'm prepared to be told its absolute bollocks though...www.pisau.net/russia-puzzled-over-malaysia-airlines-mh370-capture-by-us-navy-prayformh370/

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 19/03/2014 13:51

Hairy Shock

Dinosaursareextinct · 19/03/2014 13:53

V interesting Hairy. Wouldn't put anything past Putin, however bizarre...
