I have been wondering about this. A cyber attack.

Unfortunately, it is Ms Burley the've deployed out there now Hmm ...

usuallyright · 16/03/2014 15:06

Goldie, have you changed your opinion about what may have happened or do you still think it was decompression?

AchyFox · 16/03/2014 15:07

Inmarsat said:

Id say way over 99 percent. Its highly unusual to get a false positive that the system was still operating when in fact it wasnt

... but not impossible.

I'm still waiting for more on the 10-15 data points that Inmarsat have for the plane.

GoldieMumbles · 16/03/2014 15:11

"Goldie, have you changed your opinion about what may have happened or do you still think it was decompression?"

Given the information that's come to light since and that the Malaysian Prime Minister has sad it's definitely a criminal act I guess I have to change my position! It was all that fitted with the accident theory. But if it's been taken over then there's a lot more to it.

GoldieMumbles · 16/03/2014 15:12

"Unfortunately, it is Ms Burley the've deployed out there now "

Oh dear God Hmm

BoiledPiss · 16/03/2014 15:17

I have just read on twitter (telegraph I think) that the final message received after the comms were turned off was 'all right, good night'

Chilling, and utterly terrifying Sad

Lighthousekeeping · 16/03/2014 15:17

I thought I was seeing things when I switched on.

livingzuid · 16/03/2014 15:21

Yes this from the Guardian on the last message :(

PublicEnemyNumeroUno · 16/03/2014 15:28

It must be in the ocean, how could it fly over land undetected? I mean, just how??

Those poor people :(

misstiredbuthappy · 16/03/2014 15:34

What is cyber-warefare TheArticFunky ?

TheArticFunky · 16/03/2014 15:47

Oh don't ask me MissTired. I haven't a clue Grin

I think it's technology that allows you to create havoc remotely by hacking into computer systems.

The main threat is with hackers getting into the systems of organisations like banks and stealing data and money.

In this case people are discussing the plausibility of terrorists hacking into the planes systems and disabling its communication system and changing the route of the plane. It is indeed very far-fetched.

misstiredbuthappy · 16/03/2014 15:52

Oh I see. Everything thats happend so far seems far-fetched though doesnt it ! Like a movie.

HRHQueenMe · 16/03/2014 15:53

Re the final message, this is not unusual or strange in any way. All pilots end their comms to ATC with a nicety i.e bye bye or good night etc. Its being polite when you leave one ATC and pass to another.

DowntonTrout · 16/03/2014 16:04

Just going back to the "all right, good night."

Things had already begun happening at that point. The ACARS was already switched off.

There was some talk on PPrune about the phrase being "wrong". Either not what a pilot says when checking out with one airspace or the fact that is was more of an Americanism than you would hear from a Malay pilot.

So how certain are they that it was indeed the pilot they were speaking to at that point? Presuming it was the pilot, he must surely have been aware of a problem, was he trying to signal something was amiss? He may have been speaking under duress and trying to indicate that all was not right? ( that's also presuming he was not responsible or involved in what happened.)

Just musing really because this is all so strange.

DowntonTrout · 16/03/2014 16:07

X posts with HRH.

The discussion on PPrune was about the "all right" not the good night bit.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 16/03/2014 16:11

How are all you people catching up with pprune? I'm one fast reader, and have been reading non stop, but just cannot catch up with the end! Its moving faster than a good aibu thread Grin

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 16/03/2014 16:12

Also "roger that" apparently isnt something commercial pilots usually say, more a us military thing

Vevvie · 16/03/2014 16:13

Re the sensitive information the Malays have, could it mean if it was a hostage situation, they are in contact with the hijackers?

AnyaKnowIt · 16/03/2014 16:18

news.sky.com/story/1226767/missing-plane-may-have-sent-signals-on-ground

US intelligence is worried the plane may have landed somewhere to be used later as a 9/11-style "cruise missile".

MoreBeta · 16/03/2014 16:33

Just wondering if this isn't a simple case of air piracy.

We know that supertankers carrying crude oil are regularly taken by pirates off Somalia and also incidentally in the Straits of Malacca.

A super tanker carrying 2 million barrels of crude oil is worth about $220 million plus the value of the ship is worth say $50 million for a fairly new ship.

The typical outcome of a hijack of a supertanker is a secret negotiation and the insurer pays out a ransom and the crew and ship are released unharmed.

If this plane was carrying gold the value involved would be twice as high and also many more higher value passengers involved

Give the holding back of certain information, it is not impossible a similar negotiation could be going on.

To be honest if you just wanted to get your hands on a large plane you could charter one - no need to steal one.

NotJustACigar · 16/03/2014 16:48

I think chartering a plane this size would arouse a great deal of suspicion. Plus the way they've done it most of the people on the planet are pretty freaked out. Perhaps scaring us all like this is part of the desired impact?

NeverTalksToStrangers · 16/03/2014 16:54

I'm not sure the authorities know as much as others here are convinced/hoping they do.

The other possibility is that they know it is AQ and have received a threat re possible attack and are keeping schtum to avoid hysteria.

People keep asking how they avoided radar in other countries if they went north. They disappeared from Malaysia's aviation radar and were seemingly ignored by their military. Plus it was night time. Sounds like it would have been easy enough?
