Bloody idiots, as if this is actually going to do anything. The idea wouldn't even come in force until the alledged fraud has already been committed for some time - it's not going to save anything, just cost more.

It's pointless as the credit check won't show anything concrete.
It might show loans but not what the loan if for. You can hardly sieze a fitted kitchen or double glazing.
It might show insurance quotes but again, you wouldn't know if this is for house, £500 banger or £50000 merc.

Well it's an informative story in that it tells you all you need to know about David Cameron.

So, they're making their new Universal Credit system online-only, while publicly threatening to take peoples' computers. This makes sense .. how exactly?

If they really wanted to bring the benefits bill down they would stop propping up large corporations paying a pittance to their workers with tax credits and build social housing so we didn't have to claim huge amounts in Housing Benefit. This will achieve nothing!

To be honest, I've got the feeling that it's more of a case that unless it's happening to them, people in general, don't give a shit. As long as they are alright, nothing and no one else matters.

Do they mean that people are going to have credit checks carried out as part of means testing or something, and if they have loans for stuff they will be declined? Or that stuff will be seized if you claim benefits and find you have a load for a telly, say, that is fraud and they will come and take your telly on top of no benefits?

I don't really get it at all.

I didn't think they were allowed to take computers, something to do with data protection? I think the police can only take them if you are suspected of a crime and they have a warrant. Have I got that right?

Also many people on benefits, as well as having to keep their benefits stuff in order with them, are working people who work from home using, guess what, computers.

Pixel I don't think that's true if you get behind on payments bailiffs come and take stuff. These days anything like TV, games machines, tablets, phones as well as computers might have personal stuff in it.

Cameron is quite fond of announcing things which sound obviously sensible, such as this policy, but then not following through.

The few popular things he has done have involved defying the Guardian/BBC cesspit in which most MNers are so happy to wade. But fundamentally, his liberal guilt means he generally won't back up even the weakest conservative stance with action.

I'd have more respect for him if he just did it, without fanfare, and it was presented in Parliament as a fait accompli.

Thou shalt only be allowed a car worth less than £500.

The only relavence maybe of a credit check is if a person is claiming as being single and they apply for a joint loan or if thy have a job and apply for credit giving employment details.
