William and Harry are helping by laying sandbags in Datchet.

Very well done and to Prince Charles for visiting the Somerset Levels earlier on.

I too loved William's comment to the journalist!

Amrapaali · 14/02/2014 17:23

It is resilience, actually.

But yes, whatever the Royals do, even if it is out of the goodness of their own hearts, it will always be seen as a PR stunt. It is how the system works.

A couple of hours throwing around sandbags is not going to make a huge difference.

PoorOldCat · 14/02/2014 17:39

'Royalty are not "just like ordinary people" and that is why it is good to see them lending a hand.'

I think you'll find that under their clothes they are exactly like ordinary people.

Unless they are lizards.

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 14/02/2014 17:49

I wouldnt mind finding whats under their (wills or harry- not charles) clothes.

Grin

Harry had quite a 6 pack in Afghan didn't he? Grin

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 14/02/2014 17:55

Oooh! Did he? Where did you see that?

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 14/02/2014 17:58

Just googled. Yes he does indeed! Grin

scaevola · 14/02/2014 18:05

I don't think their presence was announced to the press (who spotted them filmed them briefly, and were then kept away). they were in Berkshire because it's the nearest to Windsor Castle (who have also been supplying stuff to afflicted farmers, according to one bulletin).

Harry could have been ordered in to help. But William was just a volunteer (unless he's got a reserve commitment and they activated it).

KoalaFace · 14/02/2014 18:21

Its nice to see anyone helping out. Its a horrible situation and seeing communities come together and volunteers getting involved is lovely.

But, a PP pointed out that there are people opening their homes. As British Citizens and tax payers the palaces and castles are our heritage and are paid for by us. I say open the doors and let flood victims stay in style Grin

Can't see it happening really! Shame. They've got tons of room!

onedev · 14/02/2014 18:31

I agree with you Op - well done to them & everyone helping as I'm guilty of being someone who is going about my daily business as normal (& via my job, making sure we're prepared to deal with flooding) & other than watching it on the news, I've done nothing in that regard & certainly nothing to help.

Not sure what I can do but would donate money if there was someway to do it.

LumpySpacePrincessOhMyGlob · 14/02/2014 18:32

I'm with Bubblegoose

Seriously claig, what goes on in your head man. Grin

Your threads always make me chuckle.

TeamHank · 14/02/2014 18:38

If I had a nanny to look after my kids and fuck all else to do then I would go and help too. I have a job and a house to run and two kids to feed so I can't.

The deferential forelock tugging of intelligent well-informed people is truly depressing. And Charles can't have it both ways - if he wants an opinion he needs to stand for election.

Nauseating.

Gladvent · 14/02/2014 18:47

Harry can boost my morale anyday, bless 'im. I think we have best Royal family for generations and if I was the Queen I'd have told the fit healthy ones to go out and hump sandbags.

claig · 14/02/2014 18:51

'Your threads always make me chuckle.'

I do like to have a bit of a laugh, but on this I have never been more serious. As Ali G would say "De Royals is showing community spirit! Respek! Aye!"

MyNameIsKenAdams · 14/02/2014 18:53

Damned if they do, damned if they dont.

They arrived at 6am. Forced away after noon due to paps. They didnt have it scheduled.

Good on them. Shame noone else is following suit

MargotLovedTom · 14/02/2014 18:59

I have only read the first few posts and I'm flabbergasted people are spouting shit about how wonderful the Royals are for handing out a few sandbags. Like that's supposed to make people feel better, knowing they then fuck off back to their top notch residences having their toothpaste squeezed, arses wiped, bills paid and meals prepared just as before.

Yeah great.

Bunbaker · 14/02/2014 19:40

Not bitter at all are you TeamHank

onedev · 14/02/2014 19:46

What does 'forelock tugging' mean?? I don't get it!Blush

Eliza22 · 14/02/2014 19:48

They could maybe cut their carbon footprint? Any time they go anywhere, there's a bloody entourage in massive gas guzzling vehicles accompanying them. And all that flitting around in helicopters.

I was only wondering yesterday, what are our royals doing, not making comment/helping out in this crisis? I don't count Prince Charles riding around on a tractor saying how dreadful it must be, to be "helping out". Sorry.

JanineStHubbins · 14/02/2014 19:50

To tug your forelock means to imitate tipping your hat, it's a sign of deference to one's social superiors.

NickNacks · 14/02/2014 19:52

You know what?

As a local, I'm grateful for ANYONE helping out here fir six hours. They were going to stay a bit longer bit were forced away because the papa were causing mayhem and getting in the way of workers doing their bit. Didn't once see a photographer or reporter help out. Just gawp.

And on another thread, spiteful people who are glad the 'millionaires' are flooding because 'they do have a choice where they live'.

I'm not rich, I just happen to live in the south east. Clearly that means we should be expected to look after ourselves.

JeanSeberg · 14/02/2014 19:52

I think we should use royals as sandbags

MN highlight of the week.

scaevola · 14/02/2014 19:52

Most of the bloody entourage is security.

LtEveDallas · 14/02/2014 19:54

The Queen has sent animal feed and bedding from her estate
Prince Charles gave £50k of his 'own' money
Princes William and Harry have mucked in, Harry because he had to, William by choice.

What has anyone else done? I've donated to the crisis fund, but not done anything else, so they've done more than me (I am on call next week though).
