After watching this I am a bit unsure if they are as safe as they say ,
But after 30 years of smoking and 6 months of only smoking e cigs my dentist said to me today that my teeth and gums are in much better health than they were 6 months ago .
So surely they have to be better , far less chemicals !
Also feel so much healthier .
Anyone else watched this ?

I didn't watch it. I would imagine they are better than smoking real fags but worse than not smoking. Nothing is entirely safe is it? But worrying how easy they are to buy imo....

magimedi · 23/01/2014 22:34

I was surprised & pleased how balanced it was.

I have been vaping for 16 months after 35 years + of smoking & my health is so much better that I am prepared to accept any risks of ecigs.

Yes, they are easy to but, but really, so are cigarettes. The local vape shop I use will not sell to any one under 18 & requires proof of age if necessary.

Thanks for your replys ,
Mmm yes I suppose nothing is entirely safe .
Yes it was balanced but feel a bit twitchy about anything negative about them as they are my new addiction :(
I am feeling very chuffed with my self for giving up tobacco but dont think I could wean myself off vaping .
Well done magimedi on 16 months tobacco free :)

The programme was interesting, but it's a shame they didn't challenge some of the safety issues a bit more. What toxins were the WHO referring to? And they should have pointed out that e liquids don't contain oil, so couldn't cause the pneumonia the lady's husband died from. Also there has been lots of research into what's in ecig vapour, showing nothing dangerous.

Ledkr · 25/01/2014 09:43

Yes I thought that, no actual facts.

I'm a social smoker so not addicted to anything but I'd like to use one just to stop me snacking in the evening, can you get them with nothing but just the liquid in?

DontCallMeDaughter · 25/01/2014 09:49

You can get ones with no nicotine in Ledkr... Have a google. You should be able to find just flavoured ones.

I thought it was a pretty balanced program. I agree that the pneumonia case seemed a bit unlikely given that they contain glycerol not engine oil... That bit was a bit spurious.

It is a fact though, that they don't know the long term implications because no one has smoked them yet for 20 years.... They're just assuming, based on what they know about the contents, that they won't result in any harm. But nicotine is a poison, in high enough doses it will kill you, but then so will caffeine.

I'm hoping to see a restriction on advertising in the future to prevent any sort of smoking being "normalised" for children. And a ban on selling them to under 18s. Even the tobacco industry is saying that 12 year olds shouldn't be able to buy them!!

ginmakesitallok · 25/01/2014 10:39

If there is research that proves they are safe would we still object to them being marketed at children?

DontCallMeDaughter · 25/01/2014 17:57

I wouldn't want them marketed at children as I'm not sure what age I'd trust them to understand that product A kills you but product B doesn't. Even when they look exactly the same. And I'd rather my kids didn't develop a nicotine addiction... Regardless of if it's "safe".

If they're addicted to nicotine and can't get hold of an e cig would they try someone's real cigarette...? No idea...
