I'm so sad about the news of his death - I've read him for years and years. And aside from his parliamentary sketches, without him none of us would care about Christmas Round Robins - here's one of his columns with a round-up of the best/worst.

And I'm very glad to see that politicians from all sides, regardless of how much he had mocked them, were so nice about him - here.

Any other Simon Hoggart fans out there?

Yes, I'm one. I've had hours of amusement from him over the years. I was shocked when I read of his death this morning - he kept very quiet about his illness. What he must have gone through, yet he was still writing his columns until a matter of weeks ago.

Several years ago I emailed him at his Guardian address taking issue with some minor point, never expecting him to reply - yet he did, and very wittily. What a great bloke to have put himself out to respond to some trivial observation. Can't imagine anyone else bothering.

How lovely of him :)

I was very shocked too - had absolutely no idea he was ill.

I'm very sad too, loved reading his columns and listening to him on the News Quiz.

That's lovely, Roxy
