"Dead" baby found alive and well 6 YEARS LATER

Anyone else hear this on the news tody?
6 years ago, in America, a 10 day old baby was presumed dead after a terrible housefire. No remains were found as the fire was so bad.
Anyway 6 years later the mother was at a children's birthday party and a little girl smiled at her. This woman couldn't believe the resemblance to her dead baby so went over and while pretenting to get something out of her hair, she took a couple of strands. Sure enough, DNA proves it is her baby. It would appear to have been an elaborate kidnapping. The child is now in care and the woman she believed to be her mother is on the run. How they all must be feeling.

BTW anyone ever read Joyride by Amy Erlich (sp?).
It is a story that pretty much mirrors this true life tale. I read it a few months ago and was extremely moved by it.

Hadn't heard that one but another news story recently was about an American boy who put his own name into google (as you do) and it came up as a missing child - it turned out his mother had abducted him from his Canadian father years before. The mother is now in trouble (forget details) and the father is hoping to meet his son again.

You couldn't make it up.

posey, that's an amazing story. I am stunned that a mother could look at a 6 year old child and see a close resemblence to her 10 day old baby. There must be more to the story, I assume. Perhaps the woman had other children and this child looked very like them. How interesting.

Story is here

Hulababy · 03/03/2004 09:07

She did notice a resemblance to her own child - specifically a dimple when smiling, and also had always suspected that there was something suspicious over the fire death - open window which shouldn't have been open.

Child is now is care and not clear if she will be reunited with her mother or not.

God, doesn't it sometimes sound as if American police investigations are totally crap? Window open - absolutely no remains at all - mother suspicious of certain person - certain person has buggered off (and left 3 other children, what's that about???) and that's the end of the case? I mean I know state boundaries cause probs but they do have the FBI, FFS.

I bet if these were white middle-class people it wouldn't have stopped there.

My thoughts exactly Janh - why didn't the police follw this up when there was some much pointing towards this other woman? Beggars believe!

Quite Janh, how awful.

Hulababy · 03/03/2004 11:21

This is an updated version of the story. Mother and child are to be reunited.

Northerner · 03/03/2004 11:31

Oh my god what a horrible story. Can not believe this.

Isn't that truly incredible, but how traumatic to grieve the death and then have to resurrect again, oh how hard it is going to be for them and how ill must the kidnapper have been!

Hulababy · 03/03/2004 18:44

I got the impression from the article the mum had never grieved; never really believe her baby to be dead in the first place.

Posey · 03/03/2004 20:37

Thanks Hulababy for the full story (I was slightly distracted by ds at the time it was on the news)
If they are reunited, well I don't know hope they'll cope. My own dd is 6 and if someone came along tomorrow and took her away, telling her I wasn't really her mum, well I can only imagine the trauma it would cause her.

hulababy, thanks for that. What a story. It jsut goes to show how you should follow your instincts. I am so glad people were prepared to believe the real mother second time around.

But yes, what a problem about reuniting this little girl with her mother. And what must she be feeling, now the woman she thinks is her mother has left her alone and gone on the run?

Hulababy · 09/03/2004 18:28

Update

Mother and daughter have been reunited. Was just on the BBC news on Tv so reminded me of the original story here.

mummytojames · 09/03/2004 18:40

i think te hardest part is going to be trying to explain to a six year old child that the woman she has seen around many times is her real mother and has anyone found out the reason behind the abduction expecialy as it was doneby a family member and i think the weiredest part about this story is people must have known this woman didnt they think it strange that one minuite she wasnt pregnant and the next shes got a ten week old baby and what about registering the baby for things like schools i thought you needed there birth certificate for stuff like that i just cant belive that people didnt notice

Hulababy · 09/03/2004 19:59

The proper mum did have her suspicions from what the original stories say, but they weren't followed up by the sounds of it. The woman who took the baby suddenly disappeared after the fire.

I think the little girl has already been told the full story. That is what has been happening in the days between being found and today.
