Article

Has the whiff of Tudor 'off with his head' intrigue. Inconvenient Uncle Chang Song-thaek arrested and executed in short order. Brutal stuff.

I know very little about North Korea but assume he had been responsible for similar in his time, so my sympathy is limited, but yes, what a regime! He was accused of 'dreaming different dreams'. In the great lottery of life, one of the worst tickets at the moment surely has to be being born in North Korea.

NicknameIncomplete · 13/12/2013 08:56

I dont know much about North Korea but the regime there scares me.

I read an article last week, on the bbc i think, and it said that since the new guy kim whatever-one-he-is took over from his dad a lot of his dads old aides/friends have gone missing or been executed.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 13/12/2013 09:01

"...being born in North Korea."

Yes, Grim for the plebs. Grimmer if you're in the upper echelons. Maybe less like the Tudors and more like the Borgias?

"Off with his head". That's exactly what it sounds like Sad.

WeWishYouAWelliesChristmas · 13/12/2013 16:49

The new guy Kim was responsible for having his ex girlfriend executed by firing squad, apparently on the orders of his new wife.

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/northkorea/10272953/Kim-Jong-uns-ex-lover-executed-by-firing-squad.html

It makes me shiver.

tethersend · 13/12/2013 16:50

The fact that that regime is allowed to continue is a disgrace.

WeWishYouAWelliesChristmas · 13/12/2013 16:51

allegedly.

Bowlersarm · 13/12/2013 16:51

Made my spine shiver when I heard it on the news. Can't imagine living in a country like that. Brutal regime.

WeWishYouAWelliesChristmas · 13/12/2013 16:51

(I mean allegedly what I wrote, tethers not what you wrote.)

ScrambledSmegs · 13/12/2013 16:54

Wow. And there was me thinking that he didn't seem to be quite as insane as his father.

Boy, was I wrong.

SolomanDaisy · 13/12/2013 17:00

The thing I find amazing is the picture of him being arrested and everyone studiously not reacting. That says some very very scary things. He was supposed to have a lot of influence on Kim jong un, he must have pushed the argument for China style reform a bit too far. I wonder if his wife has been taken to a labour camp.

tethersend · 13/12/2013 17:10

Good job he wasn't a blood relative, otherwise Kim would have had to incarcerate himself Hmm

CogitoErgoSometimes · 13/12/2013 18:15

'Half-hearted clapping' was one of the list of execution-worthy alleged misdemeanours... Hmm Apologies for ignorance but what does North Korea claim to be politically? Communist? Dictatorship? Junta?

OP posts:
Bowlersarm · 13/12/2013 18:44

Didn't Hitler order the execution of a number of his officers for 'half hearted clapping'? The joys of a dictatorship.

thefuturesnotourstosee · 13/12/2013 21:47

I think they claim to be Communist in theory.

I made the mistake of reading an article about conditions in their prison camps recently. It gave me nightmares to be honest. The most pleasant thing mentioned was that some children got beaten up because they were fighting over some grains in a cow pat :( :( I can not bring myself to repeat anything else because its even more sickening.

So many people incarcerated in the most awful conditions just for being related to someone who has upset the regime

really this story doe s not surprise me

thefuturesnotourstosee · 13/12/2013 21:50

If anyone fancies a nice bit of propoganda then please feel free to look at the Official Website of the Democratic Peoples Republic of North Korea

perlona · 13/12/2013 23:55

I have a couple of books on North Korea, one based on accounts of those who escaped. It's terrifying, even the smallest things like the wrong facial expression can land your entire family in one of their prison camps forever.

No sympathy for this guy, he's a murderous gangster, he has been one of the most powerful people in this hellhole and contributed much to the nightmare that has been inflicted on the population. Now he's been executed in some sort of power play.

I wonder what the fat boys up to.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 14/12/2013 08:10

'Fat'? Off with your head!!!
