of course I remember! I remember every time I see Orla Guerin on the News at Ten.

beansprout · 27/06/2006 20:22

Sorry to be so stupid, but are they related?

Carmenere · 27/06/2006 20:22

Can't believe that was 10 yrs ago. A sad day for Irish journilism

SherlockLGJ · 27/06/2006 20:23

They were not related, but I went to school with Ronnie Guerin and lived around the corner from the whole Guerin clan, and just felt it should be marked.

Thanks PPH.

OMG, Orla is related? She's on the new all the time - always in a different location. Taht poor woman must be permanently jet lagged.

Spatz · 27/06/2006 20:26

I remember too - very sad

QueenPeaHead · 27/06/2006 20:29

I always thought she was her daughter?

Well blow me if she isn't, I've been feeling sorry for her for a decade

expatinscotland · 27/06/2006 20:29

I think Veronica only had a son, and he wouldn't be as old as Orla. Maybe that's her sister? I dunno

SherlockLGJ · 27/06/2006 20:31

PPH

I started this thread feeling quite sad about Ronnie Guerin, you have just made me .

There can only be 10 years MAX between the two Guerins.

I'm in bloody shock that I've spent SO LONG thinking she was her daughter and she ISN'T! I honestly have spent YEARS looking at the news at ten thinking "no wonder she looks sad poor thing"

sheesh.

but glad it has amused you!

Mercy · 27/06/2006 20:34

i do remember that story - and am amazed it was 10 years ago Time seems to go so fast as you get older.

donnie · 27/06/2006 22:03

I remember her well. She was a storming journalist and utterly fearless. She went the same way as many brave and daring writers have done . One day her killers will be revealed IMO.

She certainly did not die for nothing lady sherlock. She is precisely the type of woman I will tell my dds about whe nthey are old enough to understand the concept of 'hero' and 'role model'.

SherlockLGJ · 27/06/2006 22:06

Thanks Donnie, it is just that as time goes by, I feel for her Darling Mum who has outlived her, and her DH and her DS who soldier on.

BASTARDS

Piffle · 27/06/2006 22:13

I remember it well too.

donnie · 27/06/2006 22:14

because you are a caring person sherlock!

at least they ( her family) can take both pride and comfort from the fact that she was exposing corruption and really trying to do some good. Many so called 'journalists' never come close to writing anything meaningful or significant.

Didn't a film come out a while back with Cate Blanchett? I never saw it though I wanted to.

Anyway well done for reminding people.

edam · 27/06/2006 22:18

I remember too. Her poor ds.

laudaud · 28/06/2006 09:10

My God - 10 years. I remember going home on a Friday evening and driving past her car which was covered and sealed off for forensics I assume. It doesn't seem that long.

She certainly was a hero but I don't know if I would put myself in the line of fire the way she did when you have a family to care for too. Wasn't she attacked at her home before this as a warning. I know you have to stand up to these types of people but it shouldn't be a fight for one journalist alone.

Marina · 28/06/2006 09:19

I remember her too LGJ. Cannot believe it is 10 years
ROFL at PPH though

Imafairy · 28/06/2006 12:17
