'Milk can cause cancer'.

According to the 'White Lies' campaign spearheaded by The Vegetarian and Vegan Society.

I'm totally P'd off by this as, rightly or wrongly, I suspect that human health is fairly low down their list of priorities.

I'm assuming they're not including human milk?

Any links would be appreciated.

Everything in moderation...

Except burnt toast, of course. That's the devil's work.

Tortington · 25/05/2006 11:40

is burned toast really that bad for you?

i love it crispy

coffeebeanz · 25/05/2006 11:51

A friend of mine went down this cow / goat /soya milk thing with her 2 shildren before putting them both on rice milk.

Now both kids have 2 or 3 fillings due to the high sugar content of rice and soya milks.

Everything in moderation as my mother likes to say !

Heathcliffscathy · 25/05/2006 11:52

burnt anything (or even heavily browned) is carcinogenic. but frankly if you smoke or drink you've got more worries! (i don't smoke any more but drink like a fish :) )

loads and loads of dairy produce is v bad for you fiofio....they've been saying that for a long long time. so the moderation thing is right. i do think that if you're going to get anything organic make it meat and milk. and it is definitely true that goats milk is easier on the human digestion than cows (goats don't have 3 stomachs like cows do so makes some sense to me).

Tortington · 25/05/2006 11:55

am thinking good outweights the bad. but i have no evidence apart from MC mumsnetters getting into a flap about it - which tends to send me the other way anyway Grin

The French eat loads of cheese but drink very little milk. Wonder what the statistics are on cancer over here? I know they have a high incidence of throat cancer or adanoid (sp) cancer because of all the nuclear plants around, and they are very spray happy with all their crops!

Jimjamskeepingoffvaxthreads · 25/05/2006 11:59

Have you had goats cheese? It tastes like that, although neither ds1 or ds3 appear to have noticed (ds2 refuses all milk unless its pink like lolas anyway).

Tinker · 25/05/2006 11:59

At what age does these milk related cancers occur? I thought just life caused cancer. We live too long now.

I love goats cheese! Smile

Didn't someone mention trying to make mouse cheese once? I wonder what happened to that idea?

How come people will drink goats and cows milk (and maybe sheeps milk) but not any other animal milk like dogs for example - why not?

\link{
www.food.gov.uk/safereating/chemsafe/acrylamide_branch/\OK, here's a link to some info re burnt toast}, Custy - you'll be pleased to read that they say don't worry, eat normally, we'll tell you when to worry. However 'they' are the Food Standards Agency, who are in the pockets of the food producers according to my suspicious little mind...

I heard on Radio 4 that you should TRY to eat your toast etc golden brown not black. But I sympathise, I luuurve blackened toast. (But I have given it up.)

WigWamBam · 25/05/2006 13:00

Bubble, you asked for links ... The White Lies campaign is being promoted by the Vegetarian and Vegan Foundation, and you can find their full report \link{http://www.vegetarian.org.uk/whitelies/report01.html\here}

Mirage · 25/05/2006 20:39

One of my friends was once telling me how bad milk was for us,due to 'all the growth hormones & antibiotics in it'.After she'd gone,I asked another friend, who was there during the conversation why people were so obsessed with growth hormones in milk,as they are banned in Europe
She was surprised,as she didn't know this either,& said that as she was a vegetarian herself, she knew where the friend had got her misinformation from.It was from leaflets sent out by animal rights organisations.

Therefore,I'd hardly say that they were unbiased.

morocco · 25/05/2006 20:48

sadly even breast milk has dioxins in it - is nothing safe??

Blandmum · 25/05/2006 20:49

life isn't safe. Death gets us all Smile

FrannyandZooey · 26/05/2006 08:11

I don't think anyone has said that the Vegan / Vegetarian Soc are unbiased. However when it comes to getting information on health I would rather trust a charity whose members are motivated by their ethical beliefs and principles, than the Dairy Council whose members are trying to sell you their product, to make themselves more money.

Growth hormones are banned in the EU but imported milk and products such as ice cream often contain them. Also growth hormone does have a nasty habit of popping up even in EU milk. Hmm, how strange, British farmers are normally so good at following rules and safety procedures rather than just feeding animals the cheapest crap to make the biggest profit, aren't they?
