'Milk can cause cancer'.

According to the 'White Lies' campaign spearheaded by The Vegetarian and Vegan Society.

I'm totally P'd off by this as, rightly or wrongly, I suspect that human health is fairly low down their list of priorities.

I'm assuming they're not including human milk?

Any links would be appreciated.

bubble. i drink cows milk. but i totally know that it is extremely bad for my health as is all dairy. we have massive rates of certain types of cancer and the japanese don't (altho they do have colon cancer because of how much vinegar and pickles they eat) because they don't eat dairy produce (as much). cows milk is for cows. cows have 3 stomachs. it is extremely hard to digest dairy produce and basically it is really crap for your health. so whether or not the vegan society have a conflict of interest i think it is a legitamate campaign.

Heathcliffscathy · 24/05/2006 23:28

ds gets goats products btw as he has both eczema and asthma symptoms which totally disappear if he is kept off cows milk products.

Heathcliffscathy · 24/05/2006 23:29

and we only do orgnic milk here. so that makes no difference to ds's symptoms

I've read that in Asia, breast-cancer rates are something like 1 in 50,000 - very different to in the west and that has been attriubted to the absence of milk in their diets. Apparently in some parts of asia there isn't even a word for milk, it has to be translated as 'liquid that comes from a cow'. There's no way they can know for sure. They eat considerbly more healthier out their, lots more rice, meat and fish, so how do we know.

Also, Caucasian people have 'evolved' with a lot of dairy products in their diet. If I neleived this and cut out dairy in my DS's diet, I think it would actually be rather bad for his health.

I only drink organic milk though. I blame sluttish, cheap and thoughtless farming techniques for allot of today's health problems.

The stuff that goes into the animals we eat, anti-biotics, steriods, gm feed has got me more worried than anthinng else.

tamum · 25/05/2006 08:28

A high intake of milk has been shown to correlate with a reduced risk of breast cancer in Japanese women actually. All these dietary studies comparing populations are meaningless unless the risk changes when they migrate to different countries. Genetic effects are likely to be behind most of the differences.

Custy, eating a lot of burnt toast isn't a brilliant idea, y'know [concerned emoticon]

sandradee · 25/05/2006 09:26

Have you also seen that Heather Mccartney Mills is campaigning for milk promotion to be banned beacuse it's unhealthy? Silly Cow.
Apparently there are millions of pus cells in it!
I'm sorry, people have been drinking milk for years and years and it's a great source of calcium. I think people worry far too much about things these days.

Let's face it smoking gives you cancer - Fact, Asbestos gives you cancer - Fact, but milk??

As for Omega 3's - they are now saying that too much of these are bad.

Sorry chaps but I think it's a load of codswallop. Carry on as normal.

Cow's milk is not a great food for humans. There are many many health issues associated with drinking it. I don't get the thing about the conflict of interest - the Vegan Society have their own agenda, sure, so they are going to use their money to publicise things that further their cause. We don't expect them to publish reports showing how great animal welfare is on some farms, do we? The main source of information we all get on milk is from the Dairy Council. At my son's 2 year check the HV gave me an info pack which included a leaflet about how to make sure he was getting enough calcium - published by the Dairy Council. Now that's what I called biased information.

Milk is not actually that great a source of calcium for humans and our calcium need in itself is exaggerated by the western diet, which is too high in protein (meat), and causes calcium loss in the body. Various experts such as Dr. Spock and Dr. Oski (director of pediatrics at John Hopkins Uni), and many nutritionists, now recommend avoiding cow's milk altogether. It's not just some cranky vegans making this up. However the dairy council have done such a great job that we all instantly equate calcium = milk and anyone who suggests otherwise must be an oddball :(

Amiable · 25/05/2006 09:51

I shall be studiously ingnoring this warning. AS tena lady says, if we avoided all the food/drink that is potentially dangerous for us, we would all die of dehydration within a few days!! Ok, drinking five pints a day is probably not a good idea, but who would do that anyway? Everytihng in moderation.

mind you I am the one who as a student during the BSE scare lived off steaks cos the shops were selling them off cheap!!

I agree that cows milk can cause allergies and yes I've also read articles that link milk to cancer. However I've also read in New Scientist that alternatives like soya milk also cause cancer and infact Soya is actually not that good for you over time and in high amounts.

We can read anything we want to about different things and depending on who has written it we will get a different answer.

Sometimes I think people worry too much about things

Apparently Pacific Islanders who stay in the Pacific Islands and drink little A1 milk have lower rates of type 1 diabetes , but those who move to NZ and drink lots of A1 milk have higher rates. I think that's why the A1 A2 thing has been suggested. Although it is of course only a correlation and there may be others. A mechanism by which this might work has been proposed but as far as I know not tested.

Piffle · 25/05/2006 10:16

yeah jimjams but a massive rate of coronary heart disease due to all the saturated fat in the coconuts - there is huge obesity problem which intensifies once they get to NZ too.

Tortington · 25/05/2006 11:14

CAN I GIVE MY KIDS MILK ON THEIR RICECRISPIES

?

Jimjamskeepingoffvaxthreads · 25/05/2006 11:15

give them goats milk custy :)

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 25/05/2006 11:16

I've looked at alternative sources of calcium for my kids and TBH I can't find an equivalent that they will eat.

From the data on the Vegetarian website they would have to eat 10 oz of broccoli to get the same calcium as a 3rd of a pint of milk (245 mg calcium) And as they need anything up to 1000mg depending on sex/age I might have a bit of a battle on there.

Tortington · 25/05/2006 11:21

ok - if cows milk is bad for you becuase ....its made for calves.

then goats milk it made for baby goats

how is that better?

Tortington · 25/05/2006 11:21

and does this include cheese too?

cos my kids eat shitloads of cheese

Jimjamskeepingoffvaxthreads · 25/05/2006 11:23

Different form of one particular protein supposedly.

Completely anecdotal but in the 2 weeks hes been having goats milk ds3 has changed dramatically. Sure its just coincidence, but 2 weeks ago he failed a toddler test for autism, now he passes it. Easily. Perhaps goats are more sociable than cows?

Also not sure your dd would want human milk on her cornflakes......

Jimjamskeepingoffvaxthreads · 25/05/2006 11:24

human milk cheese,,,,,, bluergh

Frenchgirl · 25/05/2006 11:31

Ok I know I'm childish but still pmsl at 'Have you also seen that Heather Mccartney Mills is campaigning for milk promotion to be banned beacuse it's unhealthy? Silly Cow.'
Grin
custy just pour some diluted organic wine over their cereals

Tortington · 25/05/2006 11:31

i dont know anyone with leaky breasticles so human milk rice crispies is out of the question.

i just didn't get the analogy of cow is for cow so is bag
goat is for goat - but is better than cow so is good.

fuck it - my kids are still getting cows milk on rice crispies

Jimjamskeepingoffvaxthreads · 25/05/2006 11:33

I was taking the michael a bit custy, I am not putting goats milk in my tea for sure. ALthough I am also keeping ds3 away (on the whole) from cowns milk, although he has some occcasional cheese .
