'Milk can cause cancer'.

According to the 'White Lies' campaign spearheaded by The Vegetarian and Vegan Society.

I'm totally P'd off by this as, rightly or wrongly, I suspect that human health is fairly low down their list of priorities.

I'm assuming they're not including human milk?

Any links would be appreciated.

It does rather, doesn't it? A quick scan of Pubmed has yielded papers showing a protective effect of milk in the diet for breast, ovarian and lung cancer, so I'd love to know where they get their data from.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 24/05/2006 22:43

I know I've read that too tamum - that milk protects against some forms of cancer.

Give 'em milk (organic of course!).

Jimjamskeepingoffvaxthreads · 24/05/2006 22:44

Do you think so bubble? I'm not sure really, I think most people are sensible about milk. Diet has been linked to different cancers though, so for example the Japanese have lower rates of certain cancers but have high rates of colon cancer (pickles supposedly), and we have high rates of certain other cancers. It's always going to interact with the genetic makeup of each individual though, so what is dangerous for me, may not be dangerous to you!

VVV. Fair enough, I'm willing to be told that soya etc is better for human health. But cancer? From animal milk?

As I've said, I wonder about the motives for this campaign.

Soya has been linked to other cancers.

For the autismy stuff it used (like 3 years ago) to be advised that you switched to soya, It;s now sometimes said that soya is just as bad, so lots of people switch to rice. I didn't want to go to rice so went for goats.....

tenalady · 24/05/2006 22:47

Do you know, ive been around on this planet for sometime now and i used to take these threats quite seriously. Now there has been so many over the years, I could of died of starvation and dehydration if I had chosen to heed all advice given.

bubble99 · 24/05/2006 22:49

We use organic milk and dairy products both at home and in the nursery. Animals fed, reared and milked in a way that I can sleep soundly about. I've heard the 'pus in milk' arguement and suppose that this refers to mastitis found in intensively farmed dairy cows. I agree this is bad but well-kept cows are not subjected to this?

'Arguement' or 'argument'? Will somebody please put me out of my misery!

OP posts:
Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 24/05/2006 22:53

argument...........I think Blush

I had a patient recently who suffered prostat cancer. There is a woman who from what I can glean, noticed that hormonal cancers such as breast and prostate cancers were far less common in the far east where milk is not so common in diet. He was trying to 'convert' me. I just kept talking about a balanced diet Wink. Let me see if I can find anything.

singersgirl · 24/05/2006 22:56

'Argument'. And I've heard lots of bad things about the potentially feminising effects of soya products on young babies (soya in the east has never been eaten in such large quantities as a milk-dependent infant eats.)

Jimjamskeepingoffvaxthreads · 24/05/2006 22:59

No, but they get colon cancer from umeboshi anywayn flossam.
I heard the same about soya formula singersgirl.

Any cancer will depend on an individuals susceptibility anyway- which is why you canfind the odd 60 a day lived to 120 type person.

Flossam · 24/05/2006 22:59

here is the authors website \link{http://www.janeplant.com/index.asp\anti milk lady!}

She does actually stress that milk is not the only factor and it is a holistic approach to self cure yourself Wink.

singersgirl · 24/05/2006 23:00

Of course boy babies - I guess it just makes girl babies uber-girly!

bubble99 · 24/05/2006 23:02

I may be a cynical old Bubble but hearing vegans saying that milk causes cancer screams 'conflict of interest' to me.

OP posts:
bubble99 · 24/05/2006 23:03

can cause cancer. Let it not be said that I am unfair.

OP posts:
cheeseypeas · 24/05/2006 23:05

So does burned toast apparently.

bubble99 · 24/05/2006 23:06

And camping.

OP posts:
tamum · 24/05/2006 23:06

And chips.

bubble99 · 24/05/2006 23:06

Sorry. Just made that one up.

bubble99 · 24/05/2006 23:07

And wearing thongs. Definitely wearing thongs.

OP posts:
cheeseypeas · 24/05/2006 23:08

No, that causes piles!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 24/05/2006 23:11

I agree Bubble, there is an element of a conflit of interest. I will pay more attention when a cancer research based institution/group comes forward with similar findings.

I am steering clear of cows milk products in any case as DD is still mildly allergic.

Tortington · 24/05/2006 23:26

look stop debating - can my kids have milk on their rice crispies or what?

and i like burned toast. i request it specifically. "burn my toast please"
