Stem cell injections from aborted fetus?? Thoughts?

Just seen an interesting story on the news that stem cells from aborted fetuses have been used on stroke patients as an experiment but has had positive early results.

Heard of stem cell research & know it is an exciting prospect for the treatment of a lot of conditions but never entered my head that they would come from aborted fetuses, not entirely sure what I feel about that!!

Not wanting this to be a for or against termination debate but just curious how other people feel about it?

I was interested as to why they included that specific detail in a relatively short report. I felt it was a little bit wrong of them to drop it in with no explanation, me and DP saw the report and straight away pulled a face at each other and said something about them stirring it up.

We have no idea about the circumstances of how the foetus came to be available or the abortion.

In the near future aborted foetuses will end up being a commodity that can be ordered and sold on a wim.

I didn't know that stem cell research used foetuses, was that this particular experiment or all stem cell research

I wonder if someone was strongly opposed to abortion whether they would say no to life changing treatment.

I do not agree with abortion but with a severely disabled daughter who in the future may benefit from such treatment it leaves me with a moral dilemma. It would not be my decision but hers. However,what I do know is that I have no right to judge others. Hope is something to reach out for in the face of despair.

It's been widely reported before that cells from aborted foetuses are used, and that is what lies at the heart of opposition to research in this area.

IIRC, there are alternative ways of procuring stem cells and I don't know why these are not the preferred ones.

Why not use it? What is the point in just letting it go to waste? Surely if there were a God she would want use to be made rather than just throw the remains away?

I agree with Xenia, it makes perfect sense that what could have been a wasted life can improve many more I don't have a problem with it at all. .

I can't helping thinking it is wonderful if something good can come of an abortion.

I was interested when I saw a bit of this - there was quite a long trailer or something? - that my knee-jerk reaction when they said the stem cells were from aborted foetuses was discomfort.

However then I thought well why not? In the UK there is no danger of children being aborted to procure stem cells given the number of abortions that happen. Unless there is some kind of mechanism that the cells need to match or something but I didn't get that gist. So applying my more rational mind than my gut I say yes and it sounds like it will do a lot of good.

I suppose i think - well I donated my cord blood. If something had happened to my baby in the birth I wouldn't have retracted my cord blood donation form. The cells are there anyway, why not use them to help someone.

I don't see why not. If the foetus was not aborted but miscarried would that make it better? If this can help someone else in their pain and despair, if it's done ethically, I agree with it.
