Stephen Lawrence was murdered 20 years ago today.

His killing changed my world (it happened near me and many from my school went to his funeral), and I think I like so many will take Stephen and the terrible injustice that was done to him onwards through my whole life. I hope his family know how brightly his memory burns for so many still.

A family member of mine was called for jury service and she was on the latest case. I was so proud that she played a part in bringing his killers to justice.

This is one crime that I will never ever forget.

I will never forget this case, I remember so clearly when it was first reported on the local BBC news, I was just starting GCSEs at school (feel SO old now!)

It seemed incredible that they didn't seem to be able to pin anyone down for it although it seemed that locally the names of suspects were well known.

His death really resonates with me. We're the same age and when his anniversary comes up or if the case is on the news, it really does make me stop, look at my kids and to be very honest have a bit of a cry and rant. I live in Belfast and I can't really explain why I feel such sadness at his murder when I know of many more closer to home but I do think of him and his family.

amandine, the suspects were positively swaggering around and felt above the law. I really hope the others are taken into custody soon.

This is the first time Ive seen this thread. I dont think anyone will now give up until the others are brought to justice, hopefully soon. I walk past the Stephen Lawrence centre every day and think of him often.

I can't believe it's 20 years.
I was only young but I do remember it, I'd have been 11.
What a terrible waste of a life.
Good to see his killers finally brought to justice, just a shame it took so long.

This crime really resonates with me too - I think it was the sense of injustice I felt & the dignity & courage with which his family fought to see their sons memory was upheld.
I sobbed last year at the opening ceremony of the Olympics when his mum carried in the Olympic flag. She was just an ordinary woman 20 years ago until those men tore her world apart. I was pleased to see her there but at the same time felt she shouldn't have to be if circumstances had been different.
Dd's school has worked hard to gain the Stephen Lawrence standard & it has taught her so much about tolerance & acceptance of others despite or even because of their differences. They all wore something orange to school this week to celebrate his life as it was his favourite colour.

Such a shocking, terrible and senseless crime.

20 years. Can't believe it's been so long. Although at the same time, it feels so recent if that makes sense.

I worked for the local police that were 1st on the scene. I know there were some terrible mistakes made in the investigations etc but the 1st officers were absolutely lovely. A husband and wife team. The husband was so stressed he developed heart problems and died as a result leaving his lovely wife and 2 kids.
It is a truely tragic case that hit a lot of people really hard.

This case haunts me.

He was born a week after I was. I remember being at a rave not long after he was killed and some idiot told me the reason Stephen Lawrence was killed was because he was a drug dealer and it was a gang-related killing. I'm pleased to tell you that I threw my drink in his face (the only time in my life I've ever done that!).

It resonates even more now because my husband is Afro-Caribbean and I have two sons. I'm glad we moved out of London. RIP.

merlypuss, it doesn't matter if the police seemed to be 'lovely' people. they worked harder at discrediting SL than at investigating his murder. this was the third murder of a black person, that year, that the police in london didn't bother to investigate, other people had to bring the murderers to justice.
