British library archiving web pages.

I'm just watching the BBC news now and I'm not sure how I feel about this.

Richard Gibby is saying that they are archiving all uk web pages. Including tweets and social networking sites and blogs etc.

He also said that the law has been changed to allow him to do that... What law and why?

I'm not very political, but MN has taught me to question things. I'm questioning this and it makes me a bit nervous - I don't want my public comments or my tweets archived for anyone to dig through, but I can't say why.

It also, and I again can't explain why, makes me think of that law change that says tey an retrospectively change laws. Although I'm not sure if I'm just making that up now.

Someone come and talk to me about it reassure me we aren't turning into a massively fucked up country

When you post on here or tweet, you are publishing and the BL is attempting to archive published material as it always has. It's always important to bear in mind that when you post on the public domain on the internet, nothing you say is private.

I presume the scope of the archive doesn't mean it can breach your fb privacy settings and archive your holiday snaps.

I don't post anything that I mind being kept I suppose.

I think what happened is I heard this and, what with everything else going on, had a bit of a 1984 moment. I had visions of people being picked up for anti government comments posted on twitter etc.

Clearly I'm getting a bit hysterical in my old age.
