I was thinking that this would be a topic this morning too - didn't realise what had been going on last night! It was in response to David Cameron's comments on the sexualisation of girl's clothing. I agreed with Justine and with David.

Caligula · 10/05/2006 10:55

Is there a link to it anywhere? Can we hear it?

foxinsocks · 10/05/2006 11:01

through the bbc site you can listen to the morning show again (it was Nicky Campbell's show) - I don't know if you have to listen to the whole thing. If it helps, I must have heard it sometime between 8 and 8.30 (while we were having breakfast!).

BBC News pointed out somewhat tartly that BHS said they had withdrawn the range that David Cameron criticised over three years ago.
Still feel that this is a major cause for concern and very pleased it is being hiighlighted in the media :)

Bozza · 10/05/2006 11:07

Think it was round about 8.15 - it was just as I got on the motorway.

Bozza · 10/05/2006 11:10

That was the boss of BHS (Philip Green) defending his corner, Marina.

foxinsocks · 10/05/2006 11:12

doesn't want to lose sales, damage their reputation

apparently, they withdrew the stuff pretty quickly once he found out about it

I still shudder when I see some of the T-shirts and underwear marketed at the little ones....v grim

foxinsocks · 10/05/2006 11:12

Fair dos, Bozza, my gripe was primarily with the BBC highlighting that aspect of DC's speech rather than the general good point he was making. NB am not a fan of Tories in general btw

foxinsocks · 10/05/2006 11:15

poor Marina - did you feel you had to put that last bit in just in case a newbie found your post Grin

God yeah, was at a soft play party the other week, and there was a girl no older than eight in a halter neck backless sheer chiffony sort of top. I'm not an old whinger but some of the clothes about make me cringe. Like all those pornstar in training t shirts you see the young girls wearing.

Heathcliffscathy · 10/05/2006 11:17

are whsmiths still doing playboy pencil cases tho? makes me fall down in total disbelief that such things exist....thunk.

Bozza · 10/05/2006 11:19

Actually totally agree with you Marina (right down to the "not a fan of Tories in general btw" bit Wink). I do think that David Cameron's point is a good one and worth highlighting.

Justine mentioned the playboy motif on stuff. There was tons of it in Claire's Accessories before Christmas when I was looking for a pretty little trinket box for DD to keep her clips in. Needless to say she ended up with a fairy box from WH Smith.

Marina · 10/05/2006 11:19

It is even on my Yahoo signature FIS "no matter how much sense he talks day-to-day, he'll never get my vote" Wink

Next · 10/05/2006 11:20

Didn't one big chain used to sell thongs for girls as young as eight? Remeber it causing quite a fiasco.

Bozza · 10/05/2006 11:20

They were before Christmas when I was looking for the aforementioned trinket box sophable.

Greensleeves · 10/05/2006 11:20

It's not just the pornographic tarts' getup for little girls that upsets me (dangerous, irresponsible and downright weird though I find it), it's the pseudomilitary/skater/mini drug baron crap which seems to have replaced decent children's clothing for boys. And the age at which children are supposed to assume these bizarre costumes is getting younger and younger. I saw a mother of a 14mo boy on here the other day complaining that someone had bought her son an outfit which was "too young for him" - not too small, just too young. It seems that at the age of 1-2yo these days our children stop being children and become the worst and most worrying kind of teenagers. It makes me Angry

Marina · 10/05/2006 11:22

Greensleeves, ds is seven and I conveniently use my WOHM f/t status to claim that I have to buy absolutely all his clothes mail-order from suppliers like Gymboree and Vertbaudet (when their sales are on). We have managed to mostly avoid militaristic stuff this way.

Bozza · 10/05/2006 11:24

Oh yes I could rant about this sort of thing for ages. I am currently searching for a hoodie for DS - just a plain, bright coloured zipped, hooded jacket that a 5yo can slip on over his shorts and t-shirts. They are not be found anywhere. Actually there is an orange one in H&M I might get.

Marina · 10/05/2006 11:27

There is just such a thing in the Vertbaudet catalogue Bozza. Our continental chums seem to love little boys in jolly colours :)
Ds was a riot of cheerful colours last summer thanks to them and the Boden sale...
